Fixing WoW fps issues with low end pc and Windows10 or superior
Hello, with this post i will share a method that will help people that have old laptops/computers to fix theyr fps, might even work for better pcs, all you need to do is change the directx ur WoW Wrath of The Lich King is running.
I decided to make this post because I have kinda of a bad laptop and I got used to play with very low fps and constantly get fps drops or stutters, it was very bad all the time and sometimes for no reason at all, like in iccs 25 i was playing fine during bosses then got a crazy fps drop (10 or less fps)
then get 50/60 again, with the exact same thing happening on my screen.
(i got used to play with 10 or low fps)
Yes i did disable vsync, lowered the graphics and did every other possible thing i found but nothing worked.
So yea... i have seen people claiming to have fps issues in the forum with way better computers...
So "Why would change the version of my directx change my fps ?"
Well as far as i know newer versions of Windows, always will run older games that used to run with dx9 with dx11 or superior, that causes WoW LK to stutter and/or have fps drops. The game is old and it's supposed to run with directx9 not 11 or 12
Well, yes having a better computer will help you with fps, but if the game is running in a wrong graphic api it will cause those issues, even with a good computer.
So here it is. I will give the credits to the owner of the post on the Steam forum named Melody:
Force a game to run a particular version of DirectX / Direct3D
So, for example, you got this game running in DirectX 11 mode, but the game also supports DirectX 9 + DirectX 10 but there's no way to change it manually? No problem, there's a simple way to enforce a particular version of DirectX for your old Graphics Card.
First of all, step into Settings -> Apps -> Optional Features -> Add a feature and wait for the list to load.
Or just press your windows key and search for "Optinal Features".
In case the list doesn't load in a few minutes, press CTRL + SHIFT + ESC to open the Task Manager, search for "Settings", end the task and repeat the step again.
Click "Graphics Tools" and select "Install", then go back using the arrow on top left of the window.
The feature will be installing, wait for the process to complete.
Once done, press Windows Key + R to open the Run window, type in
dxcpl
and press Enter.
In the "Direct3D 10/11/12" tab, click "Edit List...", then click the "..." button and browse for the main game executable, then click "Add" and "OK". You can add any executable you want to run with the same settings.
Once done, you'll notice that all the settings in the window are now clickable. Check "Device Settings" on bottom, tick "Disable Feature Level Upgrade", then choose any version you want next to "Feature level limit".
Make sure the version you're choosing is supported by the game, otherwise it won't launch. If the game gives a DirectX fatal error, you may need to use a different version. You can't force versions below 9.
Once done, click OK and launch your game.
Ah, if you use a shortcut in your Windows desktop open the .exe that you have put on the dxcpl, from my experience the shortcut interfere with the reading of the Graphic tool with WoW at least. I also run my wow with compatibility mode on Windowns 7.
Last but not least, this is my set up, its a laptop.

If you have a good computer there shouldn't be a visible difference, from what i have tested so far for better computers it will only stabilizes the fps in some occasions, but by default if ur using windows 10 or superior ur running wow on dx11 or superior. And that by itself might cause issues with fps...
I have a good computer and with dxvk I can play alterac valley (80 players on screen) in ultra settings, not at 60 fps, but it's perfectly playable. That, you will find, is impossible without dxvk.
