1. Restricted/forbidden names?

Hellou, I was wondering what might be the reason for some names being unavailable for players even though they are not offensive?
Earlier today I was thinking about the npc Maiev Shadowsong, and thought heyyyy there isnt a player with the her first name so its free to take, but nope, can't use it.
Even the name "God" is in the same class of forbidden names, that I always felt was because of possible chaos it might cause ingame with some people, and thought GMs made a simple effective choice when making it unavailable, hundred less tickets to worry about lol

I am not implicating they should be available, but only interested in the mechanics/reasoning why are some names unavailable like that. Targeting system errors, when npc has same name as player? oh the mysteries

  2. I think NPC names became a no no some time ago.

There once was a player named Applebough. Thus a Dalaran vendor NPC had an impressive 6k+ GS.

  3. The list of forbidden names is somewhere around the client itself. The client doesn't allow you to use a forbidden name.

For a while the server didn't check the list, so people would modify their clients to remove the check and the server would happily accept names that should be forbidden.

  4. Ahh yeah, scamming- should've been obvious answer :D thanks for replies !
