Yeah it usually lives in my pocket leaving it hanging down can damage it EG: Car doors, sitting on it, walking down steps all sorts of things the average person doesnt have to worry about!

It is a big safety hazard to have such long hair. I can tell you many awful stories about people that had long hair, some of them happened within a few miles from me.
