The thing is, Belgian folk stories claims that peasants used to fry small fish and during the winter, when there wasn't much fish to go around, they would fry sliced potatoes instead. This is wrong because the peasants of 1600 would not have nearly enough fat to spare and fry their potatoes in, especially during the winter.
