It's actually more common than you'd expect. Since gaming is stereotypically a male thing female gamers become 'special' and 'interesting', i.e get more attention than a male gamer would just because she's/he's/it's a female. If one then happens to be a severly lonely individual seeking social confirmation on the internet / through MMO's (or any other less dramatic reason,) the appeal of attention might make you want to pretend to be a girl to get it :D
