Because he's addicted, and he's not going to stop until he wants to, or he's destroyed so much in his life that he's forced to. My mother's an alcoholic, she's now brain damaged in a nursing home, and she put herself there, after totally destroying my life and the lives of our family. Take it from me, and listen to what I'm about to tell you before he destroys himself and you along with him. Get out, now. Get away from him. He'll drag all of you down with him, and nothing you do is gonna stop him.
Addiction changes people, regardless of what good memories you have of him, alcohol will damage his brain until he's a totally different person, someone who will do anything to maintain the lies he tells himself so he can keep drinking. The only way he's gonna stop once and for all is to hit rock bottom. Rock bottom means when he's so completely destroyed everything in his life that he finally realizes losing everything isn't worth continuing to poison himself every day. You leaving will help him reach that point. You need to cut your losses and run. Put yourself in a position where he can't destroy you, and stay there.
