I can't speak to the effect of the community (I'll let them do that for themselves), but the rest is as it has always been. All of our realms have been pvp (various reasons), and there aren't any penalties for low level ganking because that was part of Blizzard's design in pvp realms.
I understand that a pvp realm might not be for you. That's completely OK. We just don't have any such realms, at least not at this time. (Maybe in the future? Probably not though, unfortunately)
Regarding today's shenanigans, it was just that. Shenanigans. It's the 1st of April, and we know that people are going to rage, but overall, we hope that (even if it has to wait some time to have the desired effect - laughing about it later) some people would get a good chuckle out of our jest/pranks.
When it comes right down to it, though. By logging into a pvp realm and making a character on it, you are accepting the terms and nature of that realm which you've chosen to play.

Yeah...had me for a second as well and was formulating a polite rage post as I clicked to the forums. Please do not tease me about the a possible PvE realm...by all that is would I love a PvE realm. But the last time it was brought up I got stabbed. It takes a moment for some people to realize what is what. Hell, I forgot today is the first...I regularly forget how old I am. Yes I am older than most here.

I just don't understand why can't u make a pve server? I'm playing here just cuz it is a top server, where lots of ppl play (playing on server with 20 men without updates and etc wouild be even worse); but that doesn't mean that this server is best, so u have lots of ways to make it better (i played here in 2012 - i can see most of those bugs i saw that time). And i even donated some $ cuz i hope u guys will do something with those bugs, with hackers and etc.

It is not that they will never make one of the realms a PvE realm...it is about the players who play on the realms. Though those at Warmane may have the final say about stuff when it comes to PvE or PvP realms the majority has ruled on this. I myself would love to have a pure PvE realm where I do not have to look over my shoulder when questing. But everytime it is brought up those who are PvPaniacs come out of the woodworks. They have their reasons and they are the majority. So Warmane keeps the realms PvP. As to other servers having PvE realms...they exist. Not allowed to talk about other realms but if you do some research you can find them. You play here...so it goes that you have to follow what is set.

You are in the main city right? Why didn't you disable PVP? That way you wouldn't get farmed.
