We dont know the full story unless we know the Equipment possessed by both of you ... If that hunter had a equal same level item for that slot while you had a lower ilveled one ... then the ML took the correct decision.

You was wrong by all means. You got something that does not belong to you, and not only that, the leader can get banned because of you. So you will be responsable for 2 things: Rightfull winer wont get what he earned, and Innocent player (leader) will get banned. That is what you done. And I can not belive you even ask us here was it right or wrong. Probbably you have some mental derange. Can you tell us your ingame nick to ignore you?
