well there isnt really a best class for a certain role, as they all bring different things to the table.
Mages, Hunters, and Paladins are the top pve dps.
Mages are kinda squishy in pvp, hunters are solid but their mana sucks imo, and paladins have trash CCs and literally cannot touch a healer.
For pvp, I would probably say that an arms warrior is your best dps, but they are also problematic. Stance dancing and effectively utilizing all their abilites takes a lot of skill and keybinds, and they tend to be quite squishy due to using pve offsets for the most part. They need a backup healer to reach their true potential.
I would recommend a DK. They have more heals and survivability than a god, and they put out lots of damage while having too many CCs to count. but in the end, its not how good a class is, but how well you play a class.

For WOTLK the best overall class in PVP is Shaman.
The best PVE DPS is Arcane Mage. In terms of potential for highest DPS.

Hunters and rets are the best. They bring a crap tonne of utility whilst also doing the most insane dps. Those 2 are also staples in any 10 man raid. If you go Ret, you can also tank or heal, and as it so happens, pallies are the best at those two roles too.

Alright everyone just ignore the people above, as far as PVE goes.
FFB mages are the highest single target dps in the game, and that is a fact.
Hunters are second highest, but they can surpass a FFB mage if there are more than 1 hunters in a group and they properly chain their Call of the Wilds.
Then come paladins, but they will outshine FFB Mages and MM hunters in an aoe situation, as Divine storm is a central part of their damage.
As far as Shamans for pvp, Elemental and resto both have crazy heals, and ele has good damage, but they arent best. PVP is a tricky area to define best class, as they all have their drawbacks. Paladins are awesome, but they cant do **** to healers. Priests are amazing, but limited by awful mana regen. Warriors are insane, but squishy due to the pve gear used to reach bis. There really isn't a best pvp class, its all about the situation and the enemies that you are facing. Mage is gonna **** on a paladin, but then turn around and get wrecked by a DK.
Overall, the best pvp class is the one you play the best.
And to the person who said arcane mages are best single target dps, I recommend finding a doctor to pull your head out of your ***. Maybe once they were on retail, but not here on molten. AB doesnt stack correctly with SP, and FFB is just better in general. Get with the times before giving out advice.

Perhaps you should be the one to get with the times.
FFB mages have been trailing behind in single target DPS ever since the ignite and 2pt9 pieces fixes. I'm someone who raids with some of the best mages on the server as a hunter, and for the most part they aren't able to compete with me in terms of DPS on any fight other than heroic LK anymore.
You must be playing with some truly horrible hunters and rets. Chaining COTW/Furious Howl with a 2nd hunter just further exacerbates that gap.Edited: May 8, 2015

I don't know about PVE, but in PVP I doubt there are any "best" dpsers. Destro locks, elemental shams, arms warrs, rets, hunters... every dps class can deal insane damage and I doubt any of them deals more damage than the other.

Survival hunters ofc it does insane amount damage+damage over time good for both PvP and PvE players,pozdrav! But only for skilled players mm and bm are trash hunters with low dmg...
