Hello there mighty mages! I've been leveling a mage for the past couple of days with a thought on my mind that I'd play Arcane just while leveling but then respec to Frost or Fire once I hit 85 and start pvping. As I was leveling and doing all that Arcane business I realized Arcane is quite fun and I head off to Youtube to watch see if Arcane was a popular and a good spec to go when pvping in 4.3 patch, read a bunch of guides or whatever and I really think i'm gonna stick to it once I get hit the final level.
So my question is, would it be a good idea for a fresh 85 with vicious items to be playing Arcane or is that spec really gear dependant?

To my experience, Arcane is NOT gear dependant. You'll be a glass cannon from the very start. However, it's not an arena spec.I suggest you go with arcane for Battlegrounds, but always switch to frost for arena.
I've been playing some arcane recently, and the one tip I can give you for using it is to stay hidden in groups.

there are comps that could work with arcane (mage rogue for example), but yes you do need gear to make it work, as you do with every spec (especially in cata imo), arcane does a lot of single target dmg and just as every other spec that deals a ton of dmg it is rational that you need gear, cuz if your job is to mostly cc your gear wont matter as much as it does when your job is to deal dmg
