1. The name policy

There is a brief nuance in the main thread regarding possible name restrictions. Name such as 'Ifukursiz' and alike. While I'm all for this, I wonder where we draw the line. I recall being suspended on live realm for name such as 'Drugspeed' and 'Masturbater'. So I'm basically wondering where we draw the line as far as name restrictions goes.

Think about it this way. Keep your name "school appropriate" and there won't be issues.

  3. If your name would be considered childish or inappropriate, you will be forced to rename.

I believe that name policy is a good way to go. Seen way too many ppl with names like "urrettard" ifokurmom" and so on. I always report those ppl, but they come in hordes xD

  4. I think that names with non-english swear words should also be forbidden, I cringe everytime I see someone with "kurac, jebac, suka, kurwa" etc. in their name >.<

On the other hand it makes it easier to spot an *****... ;p

That's not a very clear definition. Not only because - if we're at schools - the "proper manners" dictated by many are plain r*etarded, making a sin out of the smallest things, but generally it varies what people find offensive and what not. Just think of different languages and cultures. If you ban every offensive word of every living language spoken you will be probably blocked from using words that have a very basic meaning with no harm in your own language.

The staff should be careful when making these rules. For example not every word is vulgar just because it has a*nal in it. (canal, banal, analysis, analogue, should I go on?)
90% of time the player naming his char, specially a 10 year old virgin who perhaps doesn't even know what's a*nal will not think about ensuring to not place it in his name. You could just have a little girl called Ana Louis name her char Analo after herself and get screwed over because of an oversensitive system. (I actually saw such examples happen on other private servers.) Most of the time I see a player banned for inappropriate name, I can't even figure out what was the problem with it. Perhaps I just need a dirtier mind, but I think this whole fuss is needless.

Perhaps they'll make it full blizzlike too and then no one can cry, but I'm personally flattered by the logic of the mature language filter blizz implemented. It scraps out totally harmless words if it recognizes a sequence of letters in it that have a vulgar meaning on their own. (i.eg. mistyping peninsula to penisula)

  6. There isn't a very clear definition. We aren't going to make a list of every name that would be unacceptable.

That's where common sense comes in. A good rule of thumb is that if you're in doubt if a name is acceptable, pick a different one - if you're not sure, chances are it's not okay and you're trying to "scratch the line without going past it." Going a bit further, ask a second and third opinion from friends - they might see an issue you don't.

If all that fails, including basic common sense about what name is acceptable in a respectable fantasy setting, don't be surprised when you're faced with a forced rename when logging in next time. It's not an easy task to sincerely pick an offensive character name completely by chance, anyways.

Frankly I've read some weird **** on that link someone gave in some post regarding Blizzard name policies. Stuff like "Roflcopter" and anything related to in-game slang being forbidden as well as anything related to RL like "Michaeljackson" and things like that...? i have no clue if they really flag such names for rename but it's clear those have nothing to do with being vulgar. I'm totally getting the drill of "name fitting to a fantasy world" idea , i'm a roleplayer myself, but forcing everyone to think of a new name when he just wants to be the 1000th hunter called Legolas might just be pointless.
So my question is, are you going to ban those names as well or just the offensive ones?

And for common sense, as long as the staff flagging renames have it, I am not worried.

  8. Well, Blizzard possibly wants names that fit the setting, which isn't anything bad. A policy of not using copyrighted or celebrity names is pretty much a standard in MMOs as well. Their list of what's considered a naming violation is pretty good actually. I don't know if we will enforce the same on Lordaeron or if it will be a bit more lenient. I'd be all for this being our own standard as well, since common sense can be tricky - like you working around the word filter, which is a violation of our rules... we have a word filter after all, which should make it clear we don't want those words around in any form but the fully censored one. Anyways...

Of course it is a very clear definition.

Here is why, you don't talk about doing drugs or sexual things in school around teachers that can get you into trouble. The same is with profanity. Around your friends it is a different story. Or let me put it easier, you wouldn't talk about drugs/sexual things in elementary school. Whichever works better for you

Yeah, that prudish school policy is the reason half teenage girls go home pregnant. And plain sequences of letters hardly ever have anything to do with what you're talking about. Unless you're the kind of guy who hears "you need sex" when someone says "unisex".
