I have to disagree here. I think achievement points is acceptable simply because it takes time. It is a realistic goal. No one wants to just play infinitely just to get a few extra points.
With the system in place, you still get some point to for breaking the initial 1000 or so achievement points. But not as many as someone engaged in more aspects of the game vice your argument of "time" let's be honest... time is a luxury for some. Workable goals and a system... ALREADY in game mind you... gives us the foundation. I can see them adjusting the requirements here and there to tweak the system though.
