I really don't care if you kids complaining out there getting pissed at this thread....
So I'm curious... January 2nd, I log on Warmane. I check the gifts I got. Nice! I got some points! Helps me save up for gear if I need a shortcut in the future. Some ale, fun beverages and a little toy. Not much, but I'm happy. You know, just a little gift the server gave me since I'm playing here for FREE. I go to the forums to see what other people got. To my disappointment. I see people talking **** about the server.....
I don't get it, I'll quote one persons thread "I've been playing for 6 years on your server and have donated for more than 3000$ which is not small amount of money and i used to respect this server a lot because we have opportunity to play here for free" Well we still do.....
Do people expect to get free shadowmourne, death bringer's will, and Gurthalak for free because they either played here for 8 years or donated 10k? No, why do people expect gifts like these? If you want them go buy them yourself. So let's say for example Warmane gives 25 coins (25$) to EVERYONE so they can all buy themselves one big item... Calculate the amount of money they are willing to lose for a holiday event just to please all the people... Just imagine for example what... I'll go super low here. Only 25000 total players played on Warmane..
25000x25$ (25$ for 25 coins) =625 000$
Man that feels like a lot of money... If I'm mistaking Warmane has lots of problems that they have themselves to deal with... So not only that. To everyone out there! Calculate the amount of time here and compare it to retail and how much you would've paid.... We play here for free and the server in my opinion is better than many other servers out their.... This is a gift, but what I love about it is that they thought of us. I don't understand people EARNING THE RIGHT TO ITEMS just because they paid for other items in the past or playing here for a long time...... Sounds like a bunch of babies to me...
Well, I recently went retail and left warmane because cata and mop realms weren't receiving any update since months, but I still come to visit the forums for some laugh.
Just wanted to say that your assumption is flawed, because you are giving for granted that those 25k players who hypothetically receive the 25$, would have become potential donors otherwise. On the contrary, in some cases it would actually trigger the opposite action, because 25 coins are not enough to buy one of the BiS weapons that everyone gets with coins (you mentioned gurhalak, well that's 32 coins, so you'd need 7 more coins and the minimum donation is 10 coins = 10$/€, which would leave you with an odd number of coins which calls either for another donation in order to "round up" the amount or for a gold purchase on trade. This trick is purely based on exploiting human's greed and it works. It's what all con artists do.
Just a few considerations eh
Btw
The funny thing is that now that I stopped playing here, I received 6 pts and 25 coins from new years gift lel. That's how the wheel turns
Regardless on which side of the fence you fall on with the giving of gifts discussion, I'd like to point out that the small 'factual', business based part of this poorly structured, emotive argument is flawed in itself.
Firstly, there's no way that the entire player base of 25k will donate for 25 coins. Donations come in higher quantities, over a longer period of time, from a smaller amount of players. Giving out coins in itself doesn't cost anything, and for older donors provides a further incentive to continue to support the server. For people that perhaps haven't donated before, it opens them up to a new world of possibilities. I remember playing on this server for over two years without having donated for a single item, but after the first donation - after it became both morally and financially acceptable for me to do it (having done it already), I began to donate in larger quantities, and more frequently. It's like calling in sick for work or skipping a lecture or w/e. After the first time, it's much easier the following times to do.
The drug dealer analogy can also be addressed. There are some among the community with highly addictive personalities, that also perhaps aren't as patient as others. Why do you think a drug dealer would give out any quantity of their wares for free? To both allow people to cross that threshold of the unknown/what is and isn't morally or financially feasible and to allow them to become addicted.
The reason people are upset is because having been given a privilege for five years now, it is something they have become accustomed to. That's just the way humans are. It's not feasible to rip something held in such high esteem away and justify it by calling the community a bunch of spoiled children without providing so much as an explanation as to why said ripping has occurred. That's a straw man argument, it's a logical fallacy aimed to divert attention away from the fact that the staff are potentially regretting the way the server (in the gifts context) has been managed in the past and the changes they want to make to that management . Much of the staff here were in fact still staff during the past few years of this server, and this is how it's been managed.
I would argue that if they simply don't like what the concept of giving is doing to the community, they should focus on that. They should accept responsibility for instigating this tradition and be open and honest in both their views of its implications and the direction they want to go with it, instead of just riling up and disillusioning the community by constantly insulting their maturity and intelligence with every response on this forum.
The community may indeed be spoiled, but it's not only their parents and society spoiling them. The staff have a part in that too, and it's time to take responsibility for that.
tl;dr: Giving out coins may not be as bad a long term investment as you think and the staff should be open and honest about their thoughts and intentions with the tradition of gift giving that they themselves instigated.
its warmane stuff alone that spoiled them, in first years of server being out every xmas ppl got coins either random amount or depending how much u donated, some nice mounts, i remmember veteran players who started on molten 2009 got epic flying mounts for example, then later on molten didnt give so much coins , nor mounts and other fancy things and thats where the complaints started. Its only natural if u give kids candy every year and then suddenly u dont, cuz they got used to it and if someone gets used to smting, its really hard to adapt to changes.
