1. Spell Penetration

Hello, I was doing some PvP and I saw some DKs with Spell Penetration. Does it work on DK, should it work on DK? Should I stack those 130 to negate shadow resist?
I asked some people around and no one seemed to be sure, so maybe you guys can enlighten a bit this topic.

  2. Yes, it works. Yes, it should. Yes, you should.

DK diseases, Death Coil and the rest are all "spells" dealing shadow (and frost) damage and as such the damage can be resisted. Spell Penetration takes care of that.

  3. I guess that spell pen also applies to Frost Strike?

  4. Nice, good to know. Is it worth to get penetration in Arenas? I understand in Battlegrounds everyone will most likely have priest buff, so it is real good deal.
Any arena master can give some light, how frequently its useful against some comps?
Should I go to negate druid buff or even aura/buff/totem?

To put it simple: if the buff will stay on your target (no offensive dispels), get spell pen, if not, don't. If you're playing with a priest or shaman, who will dispel/purge all of the buffs, then you don't need the spell pen. If your arena partners suck and they don't dispel the buffs, or you don't have any agressive dispellers in your arena comp, then get spell pen.

  6. Thanks on behalf of lots of DKs, that makes sense.

  7. Its worth to mention that resistance behaves on each wotlk realm different.
On blackrock it is possible to fully resist spells (a chance to resist CC effects) while on Deathwing/Ragnaros resistance is buggy in a way that it only grants dmg reduction but its impossible to fully resist spells (impossible to resist CC effects).
Im not sure how resistance behaves on the Lordaeron core, my assumption is that it works like on Blackrock.

Healers usually stack spell pene to make sure that their CC effects wont be resisted, thus spell pene is not really necessary for a healer on Deathwing/Ragnaros.
When it comes to dps that deal fire/frost/nature/arcane/shadow dmg it is essential to get at least 75 spell pene for pvp because otherwise ur dmg gonna drop significant.
When it comes to numbers, these are some testings that I have done on Ragnaros realm:

Lightning bolt dmg against a target with 75 resistance (Mark of the wild buff):

10%-25% dmg reduce with 75 resistance.

Lightning bolt dmg against the same target with 75 spell penetration:

    No dmg reduce through resistance.

    - 75 resistance grant already a immense dmg reduce of 10% until 25%
    - As caster its absolutly necessary to get at least 75 spell pene in PvP.
    - As frost/UH DK ur main dmg source is magic dmg so its very advisable to get at least 75 spell pene.

  8. I can confirm what Jakkre said, only on Blackrock CC spells will get resisted. That's why spell pen is more valuable on Blackrock than on other realms; not only does it increase your magical damage, it also prevents CC resists. That being said, getting spell pen does increase your damage for a lot of classes, and is still worth getting very often.

  9. Casters usually run with, like, 3x spell pen gems and a spell pen cloak. As a UDK, spell pen gear is bad, so you'll also need the spell pen cloak enchant and maybe even some more spell pen gems in order to get enough.

And yeah, I forgot to mention that CC spells are also "spells" essentially, so they can be fully resisted too. That's the reason why DPriests get spell pen too, for example. Dispel, Mass Dispel, Psychic Scream...

  10. Get 135 spell pen.

    Dispellable sources of spell resistance:
    - Mark of the Wild, 75 (Druid)
    - Shadow Protection, 135 (Priest)

    Undispellable:
    - Mage Armor, mages have around 130 if they spec for spell resistance (almost all of them).
    - Shadow Resistance Aura, 135 (Paladin)

3 of 4 healer classes have spell resistance that is either easily rebuffed or undispellable. I dont recommend skipping spell pen on basis that your partner dispels it. Doesn't work in bgs, doesnt work in 3v3 and doesnt work in 2v2 if you play against zergy double dps.

Additional hint for Frost DKs, you can use 160 spell pen to counter Fel Hunter spell resistance, something I did a lot vs LSPs, maybe not so important in 2v2.

EDIT: Even slightly being under spell pen cap can result in full resists. I've seen this happen often vs Mages with death coil.

  11. Shadow Protection & Resistance Aura are both 130, not 135
