WotLK DOWNLOADING WRATH of the LICH KING

I have trouble with the installation. I started it up and it gave me the log-in screen. So I that worked. Once I was at my character select screen however it said that I needed to download a patch. I tried to but the patch gave me a error everytime I tried to do it. I now don't know what to do and I'd really like to play with friends of me.
