Haven't played the game in a year or so and decided to return. Just found out that the server my characters were on, Deathwing, is now gone. Is there any way for me to retrieve my characters?

Were you a premium member? If not, they had probably already been deleted. You can try creating a support ticket, but I think you were gone long enough that they disappeared. I came back after a year and mine were gone too but I didn't mind starting over.

I'll be really sad if they're already gone, seems like I'm just a day or so too late or something. I'm crossing my fingers that they're not gone yet and can still be retrieved.

Deathwing and Ragnaros were merged yesterday. Only active chars were transferred. You will have to wait a bit til manual transfers are enabled to transfer chars that were not active. Your chars should not be lost unless someone logged on your account and deleted them.

Transfers of active chars should be finished soon if the have't already. So now it depends on how soon they make manual transferring available. If it's ready it could be even today, if not then it could take a few days.
