Are classes more interesting in newer expansions?

I am playing on Icecrown currently and the boomkin doesn't seem particularly interesting (mechanically wise) in PvP: keep your buffs and DoTs up, use starfall whenever possible, cast Starfall/Wrath depending on the type of Eclipse you are in. If you get jumped: Bark Skin -> Cyclone -> Heal. I could be doing things wrong, but I have heard about other things how some specs have very easy damage rotations too (arcane mage).
Anyway, I've seen MoP, WoD and the upcoming Legion have quite cool mechanics for many specs (shadow priests O:). Even tho the balance might not be very good with hybrids being out of control and melees wrecking faces (I prefer casters) I would very much enjoy something more in depth.
Am I missing things or are specs more mechanically complicated in newer expansions compared to wrath? And please don't be biased that WotLK is still the best just because you enjoy it more. I wanna know things as objectively as possible.

Till warlords the amount of spells was being reduced. With people not having explored the capabilities of artifacts as of yet, its hard to say about Legion for now.

Cata and Mob things were okay, but WoD (IMO) it comes down to your preference. Do you want a class to play more like a RPG or more like a Hack N'Slash as WoD (and i'm betting Legion to) is a lot more Hack N'Slash. It was a big reason why I left retail WoW and came running back here. RBG combat should never be to fast, but more about what you do next to counter the other guy or to succeed at killing a boss.

yes newer expansions have more interesting class mechanics and playstyles. playing a class in newer expansions feels more dynamic thanks to the priority style play you have and not like in wotk where you can allign your spells from 1-9 then go ahead and press only 1,2,3,4... and so on to reach maximum dps or hps or whatever. most is based on procs. and rotations arent "fixed" spell followings but more "if this procs you press that if not you press the other one"

Absolutely, and this is probably even more true in the case of Balance Druids than most other specs. The Eclipse rework and playstyle revision of Balance Druids in Cata and MoP were extremely welcome changes that personally make it difficult for me to enjoy WotLK's version of Balance Druids anymore.

I personally don't play Balance in PvP (yet), but I think it's more than just using wrath, starfall, starfire, cyclone and barkskin. I think even balance has to use shapeshifting. Whether it's for the dash, cc (bash - pounce), stealth (you can even re-stealth mid-fight if it's going bad and you're a night elf), bleeds (that counter rogues). I find it pretty sad that Typhoon is bugged, because it's a really good tool for PvP. As for PvE, yeah it's kinda boring, but nearly all caster dps classes are imo.
