Viable? Yes. But you need a lot of haste gear. When the SF had less casting time it was kinda OP in AV. But it is still viable with good gear. I'v seen some good Demo Locks on Blackrock, both in BG and in 1v1.
Fun? Hell yes. Like my friend said once "Nothing more fun than charging group of lowbies with Immolation Aura up and watching them run away from you". And the SF spam...damn. Expect to be targeted a lot in BG's.
Overall, stay patient until you get the gear and learn how to play it, and you're good.Edited: July 16, 2016

Not really a Demo Lock thing is it ;)
To the OP: Demo is quite painful in the beginning, but stay patient and you will get the hang of it.
