Pay to win?

My friends and I are thinking of coming to Warmane Icecrown, but I'm a bit turned off by the fact that you can "buy" gear (e.g., Shadowmourne) by donating and that a LOT of people actually do.

Is this true?

Instead Icecrown, come to Lordaeron, problem solved, can't buy anything with real money and thus gain advantage over non paying players.

No its not true, Icecrown has been live for a long time. Let that sink in for 5 mins and actually think about it, It's the exact same issue with joining retail at the end of the expac, everyone is fully geared already and you aren't. I've said it a million times, its PayToCatchUp sure, p2w? Just no. Paying to win, is being able to purchase something that is not available for money to have an 'edge'. Show me what you can buy that you can't earn.

I think what OP was concerned about is the fact that you can buy certain items in game in exchange for real currency, and thus gain advantage over someone who's not able to/ not willing to do the same. It's not about whether you can or can not obtain something in game. On the contrary, most of the items (if not all of them), you can obtain in game without paying a penny. But this does not in any way change the fact that someone who's in a strong financial position can buy that item and have it instantly with just about no in game effort put in, while he'd have to work his a$$ off for it.

So to conclude, it might not necessarily be pay to win, but it certainly is pay to gain an advantage and I understand why those who do not donate feel bad about it. :)

Like most others said, things are not pay to win per-say.
Can you buy gear from the coin / point shop? Yes, you can, but that is not the primary way to gear here.
Can you expect people to purchase weapons and trinkets? Damn right, it's only natural, but you will rarely see people buying full sets of gear outright.

A great deal of people gear the normal way (dungeons, raids, battleground etc.) without donating, and some of the people you do see donate(for max level equipment), mainly get weapons and/or trinkets.

Don't get me wrong though, there are plenty of donors out there, but it is not as bad as you may think.

I have toons which I have donated on, and toons that I have not donated on. I can say from experience, it's not exactly "pay to win" more of paying for time perse. As most gear you have to obtain requires time instead you can pay for it to skip the time it would take.

You can also obtain coins to buy gear from store by selling ingame items on the store.

If you had the money you would donate aswell and get the gear you want,stop saying p2w because its bull**** and is very childlish,no one pays money to win over you in pve or pvp,they just want to gear up faster.And you can catch them sooner or later depends on how fast you are,and be happy that donors support the server so you and your friends play for free.


P.S go dude start retail,and call everybody p2w because you joined late of expansion and everyone is geared(just like herr icc is almost 2 years up or so) even non-donors are bis lol after 1-2 years of icc.

And after 1 month you get the item he donated,so is equal and the only advantage someone should have over is skill,not gear,gear is easy to get but to be a good player pve/pvp wise thats hard.

No need to rage in your first post just because someone brought p2w aspect of the game up, this is a forum and everyone is free to speak their mind as long as they are not disrespectful towards other members, everyone said that it is much more pay to save the time than pay to win, but it is still indeed an advantage (a fair one in my book since you pay for it).

So calm tf down bro, it's all good. Stress management is important. ;)
