Just do quests. Simple. If you don't know where to go google zones by level vanilla/tbc/wotlk and you'll get a list of zones.
just take your time, sell stuff on AH to get some gold, try to enjoy the process doing quests you've never done before etc.
I'm not sure why you feel this is slow... 5 hours is pretty good. Had you played at that speed for a 20-hour day (like many did the first day), you'd be starting Outland.
I got my mount at level 58, and that was while only buying the most crucial spells from my trainer.. You just suffer it, the fast XP rates make up for it and the gold rolls in fast at the higher levels.
The most important part for easy lvling is to do low Level quest, stay ahead of your Content. If u are a meele and find a decent weapon for a good Price (or any Piece of gear)-buy it. You will get enough Gold in outland, dont make the journey to hard.
lol.
So what stopped you from getting gathering professions at level 5 to afford your spells and skills?
I do this every single time i level a new toon on a new server, no matter where i go. It's a solid win! I grab 2 gathering professions, often Herb and Mining. I got out and gather every herb and ore vein I can find and keep track of which herbs and ore sell the best. Usually like Silver and Briarthorn do really well on the AH at low levels and should help you build some gold fast. With my first toon on Outland I was a little behind, but went back and picked up my gathering professions and instantly started building up some gold. I easily had my level 30 mount at level 40 and I had all my spells trained. By level 65 I had my Epic Riding and all my spells trained, i'm at over 500g now at 70 and still building a great amount of gold daily. Soon I'm going to drop my gathering professions and trade off for tailoring and enchanting.
This is the difference between playing the game and knowing how to play the game. Follow my instructions and you'll have a much easier time leveling and have plenty of gold in your pockets.
As said above.
Get some professions that are good to make money on starting from 0.
I currently have Leatherworking and Skinning, I just skin and sell the hide, the leatherworking might be changed at some point, but currently, its good to have.
I'm lvl 24 and have 15g, all I do is skin, and buy gear on AH to keep on leveling.
The biggest issue I have is that I have bad gear so I don't do much damage and don't have much to defend myself with.
