Up until the server shut down, there was an announced ETA of when it would go down. It went down about 6-7min before the ETA.
As multiple people have mentioned, they had looked forward to this day, due to various of reasons, so they could play. Sadly it's unfortunate that those of you, are not able to spend your day playing on the Icecrown realm.
I would assume, that it's part of a bigger thing, that the maintance is taking so long. It could be a core update, a major fix of various of bugs, implementation and tests of new changes or something else.
If you wish to play, I would suggest you go to Lordaeron. If you get a character to lvl 80 and get a bit of coins and stuff on it, it can actually sell for a lot of coins, compared to the price of the characters on Icecrown. So go earn yourself some coins, by making and gearing characters on Lordaeron, while Icecrown is having a down time!

well, i did create a character, but i'm leveling up so slow. also i had some characters in Lordaeron, but i didn't like them. I love my Undead Mage too much. And i know i could have easily create a new one on other realm, but that's just not the same bro.

currently standing 95k HP in raid aas night elf so yeh could go 100k in raid with tauren :D
