1. Question for Linux users

Hello, I am currently using the windows 10 (I know, spyware) and I'm planning to get back to Linux. Last time I was using the Lubuntu distro because I just hated beyond limits the gnome desktop. It was 2 or 3 years ago, so I'm a bit outdated on what Linux has to offer, any recommendations from other Linux users? I thought of getting Linux mint, but I don't know how it will turn out on my laptop, I have a AMD A9-9425 (Dual core 3,8Ghz), so I was looking for something that would be sort of light but that it offered good stuff, also it has hybrid graphics so I'm unsure on what I should get.

If anyone has any suggestion/advice I would love to hear it! Thanks!

  2. Hey man, writing this from Linux Mint. In my personal opinion if you are used to Ubuntu you should get something based on it. It's a complete subjective matter what distribution you want to choose. If you have a dual core I'd say go for a light distro, so Mint itself has XFCE and MATE for lower requirements although Cinnamon is not demanding at all.
From a gaming and hybrid graphics perspective, I've heard Pop!_OS is excellent. Although yeah, it uses Gnome... And it's not lightweight.
Also, from a guild mate that is using Ubuntu LTS version: he's had problems running WoW through Wine, while I, from Linux Mint, have never had any.

Quite a big topic to talk about. Any questions, just pm me!

  3. I'll put an SSD to try to optimize it even further, I had a few issues with Ubuntu and Lubuntu when it comes to gaming so I was hesitant to get them again, plus the gnome desktop... I hate it so much... Aside from these I only used Debian a long time ago, so I'm guessing Mint is the way to go, I'll take a look at the kernel version and opinions to see if people are running hybrid cards without major issues, if that's the case, I'll get the distro this upcoming week, when I get the inspiration to put the SSD on the laptop. Thanks a lot for the reply though, glad to see I'm not the only one with Linux :)

  4. The thing I don't like about mint is that it's based on LTS. Kubuntu is great cause KDE is very nice to look at, kde connect is insanely useful and it's based on Ubuntu so pretty much all support pages for Ubuntu apply there.
I don't have issues with wine and wow, I've noticed turning off hardware mouse helps a lot for some reason and logging out to character select screen freezes it for like 10 seconds.
Pretty much all of them are the same, but as said earlier, xfce is good on low powered computers, so if that's your case mint should be a solid choice.

Also, I'd like to ask a question while we're talking about Linux, not sure if it's worthy of it's own thread.
I've seen EA banned a ton of Linux players, autoban by anticheat. Apparently, it detected wine dlls as modified dlls and it can be used to hack so yeah.. I'm a bit curious if wine will get that same treatment here some day? I'll understand if nobody can disclose that, but if you can, I'd like to have the peace of mind while using wine.

  5. By the way, what you said works! Disabling hardware cursor actually improves fps a lot! Although now there is some delay between physical mouse movement and what's shown on screen, but I can live with that; this is not an FPS game.

  6. Manjaro is supposed to be of the best distros for gaming, if that's important to you. Also has many DE's to choose from (I prefer it with KDE).
