For a fresh new player, is it possible to start playing tank?
Hi! i come from TBC and i've played a lot ( A LOT ) of warlock and i've grown sick of it. excited for wrath, i decided to jump on warmane to play Paladin in the expansion i hear the class was at its peak. now here's my question:
Considering everyone in the server is probably max geared already, is there any hope for a fresh new character to participate in raids as a tank? not an MT, even an off tank would be fine, i'm just asking to see if i'll be able to get in raids at all before i get my tier sets.

There are always new players coming, including yourself, and you think everybody are max geared? Everybody aren't max geared. Fresh new characters gets created every minute, you're not the only new one either.
Yes, you can make a tank as fresh, and do good job at it. I still recommend reading some Protadin guide, and some general tanking guides. At levels 1-70 you're only expected to pull, keep aggro and buff. So you have a lot of time to learn the basics. 70-79 doesn't change that much, you'll start using CD's and other utility spells of paladins more. Ofc it would be much more beneficial to learn to use utility spells as you unlock them while leveling. At 80 you're expected to understand how tanking your class works, and what to do besides running to mobs and taunting (gameplay mechanics, boss tactics [if any]).
If you play your class right, gear it properly, use gems and enchants, learn raid tactics, listen when somebody gives you suggestions on how to play (better).
if u want to start playing tank i would recommend signing up to raids as a dps then farming out some tank gear from the raids that u out geared on your dps spec , then start with something easy to get the hang of tanking like hc DNGs then move to raids like toc10 / 25
when it comes to gear i think u can make it into some starter raids as a tank like toc10 without restrictions or heavy gear requirements or beeing required to have a full set
i would also recommend watching what tanks do for each boss to get the hang of it / watching some YT vids.
and when it comes to max geared ppl dont worry not every raid is asking for a max geared tank / bis players so for starter raids if you see a bis geared player in toc10 or something like that they are mostly there to help / farm EOT or for what ever other reason

I would advise against this.
You gear faster in RDF as tank, and you can get solid 200-232 ilvl pieces from running ToC FoS PoS HoR farms and up to 245 pieces from EoT vendor. The gear you get from these alone are enough to tank ToC 10, Onyxia and short alt runs at ICC10. All the gearing while further learning tanking is only a benefit.
Going the extra mile to gear as DPS 1st in order to raid takes considerably longer.
