Why every avatar i try to upload on my profile is not accepted?

I have already tried to upload many photos in size 100x100, 50x50, 25x25, and all smallest of 97 kb in png and jpeg
Nothing... every time appear the message "Upload of file failed." (using browser mozilla firefox)
I hope someone will tell me why
