WotLK Ingame Naming Policy

I recently got a 2 day suspension of using a name that in my eyes was innocent. I have searched all over the forums and I cannot find the naming policy anywhere.

This threads goal is to find out what names are ok in order to avoid suspensions in the future & to maybe help others that are running into a similar issue.

Can a moderator chime in and help guide us with which type of names are not allowed?

If you have to wonder whether your name is allowed or not, chances are it isn't.

There's no list or guidelines, because we know players do have enough common sense to distinguish what's fine and what might not be.

As Shred says, if you aren't 100% sure it's an acceptable name, it's better to not use it. Just use a normal name, without any "zings" or "gotchas" or "hot takes" or controversial topics that are sure to annoy some group of people.

We have literally hundreds of thousands of created characters and a microscopic minority ever gets banned for an unacceptable name, so I know for a fact this isn't anything far fetched or "confusing" to anyone.

So is it ok to consider that any type of sexual body part or sexual activity would be flagged for a rename? The same with any color of race, any kind of slur, any kind of word that can be considered offensive to anyone?

To add to this, what about names that have a certain activity in their name that is related to ending someones life like 'murder', 'death' etc. is this also offensive?

I'm not going to go into whatever list you come up with. That's usually the biggest red flag someone wants to know limits to see how far they can push it. Follow the guideline offered in my previous post.

I'm going to use a normal name myself from now, 100% agree with you there Obnoxious.

I'm not trying to figure out what boundaries there are. I'm trying to find out what is considered offensive so I can report them. In this case I guess I will just report the names I consider offensive & hopefully a GM will take action...

That would be another reason for no guidelines beyond "use common sense."

Whether it applies to you or not, people who get banned for an edgelord name are prone to having the genius idea of "taking revenge" by sending floods of reports of anything that might be twisted in a way that makes it seem offensive to someone.

Just report usernames that are truly offensive to you. If it's offensive for someone else, they will report it themselves, don't worry. It's better than maybe getting banned for excessive false reports when the GMs have enough of it.

This is not about revenge. Honestly I did not find my name all that offensive since I've seen multiple max level characters with much worse names (Never bothered to report them at the time though).

I'm the type of person to follow the rules to the dot. I did not know about this type of naming policy so since you enlightened me with "use a normal name" It obviously applies to everyone and not just me. Because of this, I will help the GMs and give them information to hopefully cleanse the servers of inappropriate names.
