WotLK Characters Lost after account retrieved

it still shows how many characters i had on the servers list while ingame, but none of my characters appears.

is there a reason we get our characters wiped from the databases?

last time i logged in was 3 years ago and now i lost my 3 characters

Or maybe your account got hacked and the scoundrel responsible deleted your characters.
