The only people who have to pay that much are rich kids going to the top universities. They have need based scholarships and grants. Stanford for example pays tuition and room and board if your family makes under $60,000.
Also, your $9000 tuition rate is $4000 more than what I pay, and the two of you combined got less scholarship and grant money than I do.
Why give somebody money if they can't keep up their GPA? It's not that hard. You don't pay someone who doesn't show up for their job. And you fire someone who doesn't do everything they are supposed to. It's a dog eat dog world. doggie dog world.

This. There are so many scholarships and grants available that it's almost impossible to pay full price for something unless you just happen to be a total ***** with rich parents. Hell, there are even scholarships that you're eligible for just for being a ginger, wearing a duct tape outfit to prom, being tall, short, or obese, and so on. Almost all of the top schools will meet 100% of your demonstrated need through financial aid, grants, work studies, and so on.

I find there's something wonderful about the ability to communicate in different idioms. It opens so many doors. I couldn't imagine how different my life would have been had I not learned English. It's just weird to think about it.
However, I guess there isn't much point for someone who's already on the center of world to waste time learning other languages. Most things are already available to you by default, after all.
I've heard Americans don't even get taught much about other countries' histories other than their own in their history classes.
