It was common when I played retail , another thing that they did that has not caught on here yet is the sold achievement runs for gold, kingslayer or Ulduar mount runs a lot of things like that.
I've been there, and trust me, it ain't easy. I used to organize my own pug raids (without RaidCall!) back in old Lordaeron. Even relatively easy raids like OS and ToC were chaotic mainly because players here only look after themselves. Nothing wrong with that; it becomes a problem when you are motivated by obtaining the gear more than the playing the game.
My theory is that Warmane's immense population is making players disposable. This is because when you screw a certain player, you can always find someone else to replace him. My experience in playing in smaller servers is that when you screw up once, everyone will know what you have done and you need to redeem yourself to be accepted again. In here, you'll be forgotten in a few hours because we deal with hundreds of players a day.
Actually hehe, Its been done several times.
Since Ragnaros opened Ive been in pretty much every "top horde raiding guild" and Ive seen plenty of them selling kingslayer and even LoD.
First times we did it was like 2-3 years ago, sold kingslayer for 100k gold, then split the gold with the guild, we did it a couple of weeks, then the officers decided to keep the gold themselfs instead, caused alot of drama and forced ous to stop selling acheivements.
In the end 3 guilds did it, and made quite alot of gold from it, a normal Kingslayer 25 went for 70k +
But many people saw more negative effects on doin this since we actually gave a person a acheivement in a dungeon he might even never set his foot in, and forever he will have that acheive and get into every raid, even guilds, proving he has the skills needed, when he actually dosent.

Just wait for the GDKP runs , if you think you're now pissed - think again when this starts happening :D
There's the principle of "Just because you can do something, doesn't mean you should."
It pretty much applies to the situation as people who reserve items are sort of abusing the opportunities given by the large community as someone above posted.
However, it works, and if it works then it isn't stupid.
Why am I telling you it "works"? Because people always tried to cut down competition and if you ask me this is still more effective than simply denying a class from your raid that could be otherwise useful just because you don't want more people rolling on your stuff. Some classes still have harder time than others to get into raids and before the reserving trend it was only worse for them.
"Everyone stop joining" is not going to happen because the mage doesn't care if the tanking loot is reserved and vica versa. If they find an intelligent, decent raid leader who helps them get their stuff done, why should they care if an item they don't need is reserved? Because it blocks 20-30 other randoms on global wanting to join? Get real. It's a polite way of the raid leader saying "I'm looking for people who don't need this item."
There were always shadow priests who joined a raid that needs healers and change spec and spend the whole raid complaining afterwards that they hate healing and don't want to roll on heal gear. This is fully the same. If a raid doesn't want you and you have to choose between making a sacrifice to join or not join at all, you have only yourself to blame if you choose to go and ending up in QQ is pathetic.
As for the paid runs, market is based on supply and demand. If there are people willing to pay 70k for a Kingslayer, why the hell not?!
FYI, there are arabic guys paying millions of cash IRL to see naked white women swimming around in turtle tanks. If there's demand, there will be supply, deal with it...
