A terribly underestimated factor, the entire server had access to a near-bis item for free once per month for almost a year and a half, counting across all accounts, that's a ton of gear. Enough to enable alt runs for many raiding guilds, which would in turn increase the amount of gear obtained even more. Not to mention it allowed making skips along the gearing curve which would allow you to get a character boosted and geared to ICC gear levels that much faster.
And taking into account that there have been guilds clearing 25hc content every week for 2 years straight, it's not a surprise everyone is running around in 6k+.

Getting 6k gs as non premium is really not that hard.
When u raid icc 10/25 and VoA 10/25 each week and do rdf hc and the weekly quest then u get all the EoF gear pretty fast. Even when u only pug u can reach 6k gs easily.

/played 5 days. On my non donor, non coin, non guild alt warlock whos now 5983. Just a few Icc and Rs runs with VOAs. If you know what to do you get gear fast,another example ive had my guldie ding ding 80 on his alt and the next day be doing toc, 2days later hes in icc 10 @vdw with a pug cuz he knows how **** works. Now im not saying him having a main and cash to buy gems/ench didnt help. But you can do that with a main char in a week or 2.

Bring a lot of mana pots, flasks, etc. They gave me a bis belt for doing well.
