I also started a new campaign in Rome Total War but I went with the Brutii Romans instead of the Julii Romans. In addition to that I also figured out how to march my army while maintaining its formation, how to run in a phalanx mode, how to position my units as well determining how spread out they are/how thick their lines are.

I think the fact that I had to find this out from a youtube video and it wasn't in any tutorial is pretty stupid given how much it completely changes the game.
