currently helping my brother to gear up i am wondering whats the GS needed to join heroic hes currently 2890GS but because ive not played for a few years consistently i can no longer remember or find what GS is needed does anyone know?

You look for item lvl (ilvl), not gear score. Get him above 180 ilvl average and it should do the trick. Note that heirlooms are all ilvl 1.
