    PVE Protection Paladin Guide

PVE Protection Paladin Guide – By Zsini
Welcome everyone! This guide is mainly for new players, for those who want to get better in tanking as a protection paladin. In this guide I will write down everything you should know about protection paladin, starting from rotation all the way to min-maxing tanking positions.
    Stats
First let’s see the necessary stats:
    Spoiler: Show
540 Defense = you need this to not get a critical attack from a boss (lvl83 target)
Just mentioning here that resilience also reduce the chance to get critically hit (Resilience rating at 460 makes you immune to critical hit from bosses)
Defense beside that, that it gives you immunity against critical attacks, it also increases your dodge, parry, block, or to be missed. +25 Defense (not rating), will give you +1% Miss, Parry, Dodge, and block, against equal enemy target. So you need at least 540 defense, but you can keep gathering it from items, since it will give you these defensive percentages.
263 (8%) melee hit = 32.79 hit rating = 1% decrease in the chance to miss, means 32,79 x 8= 262,32 – so you need more than that, which is 263 to not miss with your melee spells.
446 (17%) spell hit =26.23 Hit Rating = 1% increased chance to hit, means 26,23 x 17 = 445,91 – so you need more than that again, which is 446, this is important because of your taunt, to not miss. Since there is a glyph called https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=41100 , you get an extra 8% hit on your taunt, that leaves you to 9% spell hit, if there is a shadow priest with https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=33193 talent, or a balance druid with https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=33602 that gives an additional 3% hit on the target. This leave you with 6% spell hit – 158 spell hit rating what you need to gather for raids, to not miss your taunt.
26 expertise = dodge cap, the boss can’t dodge anymore from your attacks if you are in front of it, this is the soft cap
56 = parry cap, the boss can’t parry anymore from your attacks if you are in front of it, hard cap, important for dragons such as Halion and Sindragosa
Armor: in many guides they say you need 36k armor for tanking endgame content, technically you need as much armor as you can get, but let’s see what that 36k armor really gives.
36000 armor = 68.39% damage reduction against lvl83 target (boss), the maximum damage reduction you can get is 75%, now in-game if you move your cursor on your armor it shows against lvl80 target not against bosses, to be able to get the 75% damage reduction from armor against bosses, you need 49905 armor, which is only obtainable from a certain gear, what I will show you later on. In general you need as much armor you can get, but for tanking LOD I would recommend to get the 70% damage reduction which is 38815,and for RS HC around 37k armor without buffs (including devotion aura), since you will get constantly hit by massive melee hits. You can tank LOD with less armor, the previously mentioned amount should be the ideal to reach in BIS. Although you will have around 38161 with the itemization I will show later. Overall for LOD you should get around minimum 34k armor without buffs, and for RS HC 36k would be the ideal minimum.

Agility: gives you armor and dodge

    Rotation
    Opening rotation before every fight:
    1. Before the pull you should apply https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=53601 at 7 seconds left from pull
    2. https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=54428 for 3% damage reduction
    3. https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=48952 + https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=40093
    4. https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=31884
    5. https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=48827 and before it lands
    6. https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=62124

This way you will have every defensive spells on you, and you can do the maximum amount of damage at the very start of the encounter. You have to practice this opening, to make sure your taunt is used at 0 on pull (it’s important that https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=62124 hits first, because it only deals damage if the target isn’t already targeting you), and then your https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=48827 lands.
After this you use your single target rotation:
    1. https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=61411
    2. https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=53595 ,
    3. https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=48952
    4. https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=20271
    5. https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=48818

and continuing these off cooldown, making sure you keep up your https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=53601 on yourself.
    AOE rotation is the following:
    1. https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=53595
    2. https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=48818
    3. https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=48952
    4. https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=48827

    Defensive Cooldowns
Your defensive cooldowns are the following:

    Talents
    Basic talent:
    Spoiler: Show
Now let’s move to talents, first below is the basic talent that you have to have, then you have 8 points left. You can use those 8 points to the following, if you prefer to solotank bane, you can use 1 talent for https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=20487 (10 sec off from your hammer of justice), and 2 points on https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=53696 (10sec from hammer of justice), if you want to have AOE damage, you should take out https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=69403 (damages 2 additional targets), if you want to get some movement speed bonus which is extremely helpful in ICC then you have https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=26022 (8% movement speed, 15% with 2 talent points), if you want to get more tanky, then you got https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=63646 (with each point 1% more healing done, and healing receive), and you could also go towards https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=20117 for more DPS ( each talent point 1% more crit), or if you want to go full dps talent, then take 2 points off from https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=53696 , and you can go for https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=31866 ( 1% more damage with each talent).
In this picture you can see the basic talent tree which you must have, and then you have the remaining 8 points you can spend on whatever you would like to.
    Basic Talent Tree:

I would recommend to put 2 on https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=53696 , and then spend the 6 remaining talents. You could put 5 on https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=63650 and 1 on https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=69403 , most likely this is the best talent for solotanking LOD/Bane, also Seal of Command is extremely helpful in RS 25 HC in case you are addtanking. Other option is to put 1 talent on https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=69403 , 2 on https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=20118 and then 3 on https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=31868 if you want to deal more damage.

In the following I show you my talent tree which is:
    Spoiler: Show
The best talent in my opinion:

The reason I chose this talent tree, because I prefer Seal of Command, its useful on trash in ICC, RS 25 HC, if you are addtank, TOGC 25, and I always use it on LK if I’m the offtank, to keep ghouls on myself, and damage them down faster, so the necrotic can stack up faster, since it spends less time on the target. https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=26016 is a must, you can ignore it only if a ret paladin has it, but this needs a certain group that always raid with each other, from those 2 talents, you could put 2 more on https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=63647 for extra tankiness, or going a bit towards DPSing with https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=31867 or https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=20118 , the reason I put 2 talents on https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=26023 , becasue I like to move fast :d, it’s helpful in a lot of scenarios in ICC and TOGC (Anub) for kiting the adds/boss to a better position, such as the Nerubians in togc, or like LK in phase 3 to the other side. In general more movement speed is better, and I like it, if you don’t find it useful, you can put those 2 talents on https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=63647 for the healing.

    Consumables:
    Food
What food you should use: https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=42999 , the reason to this is because it gives 40 agility, which gives you armor, but if you don’t want to spend gold on food, the https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=43015 is just fine, beside this what most of the people don’t know is https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=25659 , which gives you +25 Stamina, and it doesn't remove other food buffs, means free +25 stamina. Obviously it’s not a big upgrade, but in case you do hard encounter, meaning solotank LOD, or 2healing RS 25HC, you should use this as well. Its obtainable from a quest chain, also the recipe is BOE, so you can sell it in auction house. You can do the quest in a few hours. In case you miss some stats for some reason:hit rating or expertise rating, it can be a good idea to use the food that gives them https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=42996 , https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=42994 .
    Flask
https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=46379 (1300 bonus hp), you use this basically everywhere, the only time you could switch to https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=44939 (50 resist to magic), if you are out of CD for a breath on Sindra, Sapphiron, Halion, then switching it back to Stoneblood, you can use it on Anubarak (TOGC) in last phase, but as a tank it’s not really important, only time it could make a difference, is doing 0% buff lod, and switching in the room, but then again you would have to switch back. So overall https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=46379 is the ideal and best flask for every encounter. If you are in low gear you can consider using https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=44329 (45 expertise) / https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=44325 (45 hit rating), in case you are missing expertise or hit rating, and you can combine it with https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=44328 (45 defense rating) / https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=40097 (800 armor).
    Potion
https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=40093 (+3500 Armor for 2 mins), you will use these potions only, 1 before the pull, and 1 during the fight where you need it. Beside this you could use https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=40213 / https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=40215 / https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=40214 / https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=40216 / https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=40217 , on some fights like Sindragosa on a last breath what you need to survive, but it’s extremely rare to use these. The basic stays https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=40093 for every fight.
    Professions
As you can see (a bit down) I’m using Jewelcrafting for bonus 63 Stamina ( https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=36767 gems, you can have 3 on you at the time), you can switch this profession to Enchanting which gives, + https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=59636 on 2 rings, overall +60 stamina / Blacksmithing with 2 more sockets in https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=55628 and https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=55641 , means +60 Stamina / Leatherworking + https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=57690 for your Wrist, so +62 because you would put + https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=44947 to your wrist without it/ Mining with https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=53040 (+60 Stamina). So overall not much difference but Jewelcrafting gives the most stamina with bonus 63 stamina. The other Profession is always Engineering, not only because of the https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=54861 which is extremely helpful in most of the encounters, but it also gives https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=63770 to your hands, and + https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=67839 to your head. With engineering you can also use https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=41119 for extra damage when there are multiple targets, such as on trash, Marrowgar’s spike, Lady’s adds, Lich King’s valkyr, and so on.

    Weapon: 1 https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=36767
    Shield: 1 https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=40119
    Enchants:
    Head: https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=67839 - Engineering
    Shoulder: https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=44957 -10k honor
    Back: https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=39001
    Chest: https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=39005
    Wrist: https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=44947
    Hands: https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=63770 - Engineering
    Waist: https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=41611
    Legs: https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=38373
    Feet: https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=55004
Weapon: https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=38925 (chance for +120 Agility, agility=armor, so more armor)
    Shield: https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=44936 (+81 Block Value)
    Mentioning here some extra “enchants”:
    https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=23576
    https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=25521
With these gems you end up with 269 Hit (8.20%) and 22 Expertise without seal, 38161 armor, 584 Defense.
    Major Glyphs:
    https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=45745 (3% damage red)
https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=43869 (+10 expertise with Seal of Corruption)
https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=41100 (+8% hit for your taunts)
    Minor Glyphs (These Never change):
    https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=43368
    https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=43365
    https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=...n-be-placed-in (5mins)
Let’s see what you can switch, from items you can use https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=45145 , which gives you 450 Block Value, this is considered BIS in ICC, although I prefer https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=47661 +200 strenght for aggro, you can switch https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=50672 which gives you +51 hit, means you can switch 2 Hit gems for Stamina, even 3 if you don’t mind going under 8%. You will end up with a bit more HP( around 300 HP), and a bit more Armor (Around 200 Armor), due to the gem switches, and the agility you gain from the weapon. It’s a small difference. With this you will end up on 17 expertise without seal, so if you want to switch https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=43869 , you won’t reach the 26 expertise, which means you can miss. But you end up with a bonus CD, with https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=45747 .
You could also consider using https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=50625 (ICC 25 HC VDW) with https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=50672 , and then you end up with 24 Expertise, but losing 35 Stamina. On other items, there is not much to change, you could switch https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=50404 to https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=49489 (Onyxia 25), but then you again have less Hit than necessary, you could also use https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=50642 (ICC 25 HC Lady), but same issue, not enough hit.
On other items, what you could switch is https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=50718 ( ICC 25 HC BPC) / https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=50627 (ICC 25HC VDW) for more hit, this way you can gem stamina, but you end up with less Armor. Then you have the https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=50611 (ICC 25 HC Marrow) and https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=50691 (ICC 25HC Festergut), which gives more stamina (+23 from waist +17 from wrist), but losing armor(-663 from wrist and -593 from waist), since in ICC and RS you lose 20% Dodge chance, you can benefit more from flat armor, than dodge. So overall this is the best itemization in my opinion.
Overall I prefer this build because it gives me HIT cap and Expertise cap while I can stack up armor, and I can switch to https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=45747 in case I want another CD. With this itemization you can’t miss your Holy Wrath, which is crucial on Shambling (LK) and on Nerubian Burrowers (Anub).

Let’s move to RS HC build, as known as Expertise build, Your talents are the same, itemization changes the following:
    Spoiler: Show
    Head: https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=51266 (T10)
Neck: https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=50627 (ICC 25 HC VDW)
    Shoulder: https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=51269 (T10)
    Back: https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=50466 (Frost emblems)
    Chest: https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=50968 (Frost Emblems)
Wrist: https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=51901 (ICC 10 HC DBS)
    Hands: https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=51267 (T10)
    Waist: https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=50991 (Frost Emblems)
    Legs: https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=51268 (T10)
Feet: https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=50625 (ICC 25 HC VDW)
    Ring1: https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=50622 (ICC 25 HC VDW)
    Ring2: https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=50404 ( The Ashen Verdict reputation)
    Trinket1: https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=50364 ( ICC 25 HC Sindragosa)
    Trinket2: https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=54591 ( RS 25 HC Halion)
Weapon: https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=50738 (ICC 25 HC LK)
    Shield: https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=50729 ( ICC 25 HC BQL)
Libram: https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=47664 (Triumph Emblems) or https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=47661 (Triumph Emblems)
From those 2 librams it’s up to you which one you choose, tho have to mention that dodge is also reduced in RS, not only in ICC, this way https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=47661 could be better for aggro, but you shouldn’t have any issue with aggro, so the bonus dodge from https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=47664 , even if its low could worth more.
    Gems and enchants:
    Head: 1 https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=41380 + 1 https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=40118 https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=67839

    Shoulder: 1 https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=40119 - https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=44957
    Back: 1 https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=36767 https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=39001
    Chest: 1 https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=40125 + 1 https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=36767 + 1 https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=40118 https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=39005
    Wrist: 1 https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=40125 https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=44947
    Hands: 1 https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=40119 https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=63770
    Waist: 1 https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=40162 + 2 https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=40119 https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=41611
    Legs: 1 https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=40125 + 1 https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=40119 https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=38373
    Feet: 2 https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=40119 https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=55004
    Ring1: 1 https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=40119
    Ring2: 1 https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=40125
    Weapon: 1 https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=36767 https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=38925
    Shield: 1 https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=40119 https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=44936
    Major Glyphs:
    https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=41100
    https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=45745
    https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=43869
With this you end up with 266 Hit (8.11%) and 46 Expertise without seal, with seal 56, which is the cap for Parry, means no parry haste from you. You can use this build on Halion, and Sindragosa, basically on dragons, to minimize the damage you get, since if the boss parry’s your attack it will hit faster, same with DPSes, that's why they DPS the boss at the back leg, so the boss can’t parry. You don’t need Expertise food, or elixirs, so you can stick with your https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=42999 food, and https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=46379 .

If you end up as an add tank in RS 25HC, you don’t need expertise build, you can go with your basic build or you can also use the Armor build which is the following, it's also decent in ICC, but I would recommend the build I mentioned at the beginning:
    Spoiler: Show
    Head: https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=50640 (1 https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=41380 + 1 https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=40129 + https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=67839 )

With this build you can reach armor cap (75%) with https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=40093 against bosses, which is 49905 armor. However you won’t have expertise cap at all, but will have hit cap. It’s an interesting build, but I wouldn’t recommend it in case you are looking for the best gear. Although it’s decent for addtanking, and in ICC/TOGC. But to be honest, you can be in 5k GS as an addtank, and you can do the job, you don’t need any itemization for it, but I leave this armor build, because its decent in ICC/TOGC/Ulduar, and for addtanking as well.
What you can switch in general beside gear as an addtank is your glyph, instead of https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=43869 you can take https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=45742 , which makes your https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=53595 hit 1 additional target, which is helpful as an addtank.

So far we talked about ICC and RSHC BIS Lists, let me show another build which is called Block Build, it’s the following:

You need the following macro (to see if you are unhittable):
    [ident]
    Code:
    /run ChatFrame1:AddMessage(format("Unhittable at 101.6%% - you have %.2f%%", GetDodgeChance() + GetBlockChance() + GetParryChance() + 5 + 1/(0.0625 + 0.956/(GetCombatRating(CR_DEFENSE_SKILL)/4.91850*0.04))))
    [/ident]
You need 101.6% , Without buff you will end up with 97.52%
    With https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=20217 : 97.74
    With https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=20217 + https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=44328 + https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=39666 + https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=42999 you have: 100.06%
    + With https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=48470 : 100.76%
    + With https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=57623 : 102.79%
Means you can switch 1-2 gems for hit, so you will miss less, but you won’t have the hit cap to stun adds, just to not get basically any damage from 82 and under lvl target s. This build can be used in TOGC on Anub (Nerubian Burrowers), in Ulduar on Freya adds, and Razorscale adds, if you are doing Glory. It’s a nice build to have, but most likely you won’t use this, since you don’t have hit cap, means it’s not garenteed that you can interrupt the Nerubian Burrowers spell, because you’ll have 100 hit rating (3,05%), so your spells could miss on them, as well as your abilities and auto attacks, which can make holding aggro on them harder.

    Boss fights
Now we talked about every Itemization, Talents, Foods potion etc, let’s move on to the fights, where I show you what you should do on each boss as a paladin tank. First I want to say the opening is always the same, so I won’t write that down, since I started with that at the beginning.
    ICC HC
There a playlist from SayNoToTryhard about ICC tactics: General ICC tactics. Below are the prot paladin specific tactics:
    Marrowgar:
    Spoiler: Show
Using https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=62124 on Spikes (does damage if the target is not on you, on nonplayers), also timing https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=31935 , and https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=53595 when spikes spawn, this way you help killing them faster, on bonestorm use https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=64205 if it hits the raid, for extra damage reduction, and https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=498 ALWAYS AFTER first bonestorm ends, since the healers have to move, and it’s harder to heal while moving, making their life easier. Also you can use https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=10278 on a https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=69057 target during https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=69076 , this way they won’t get any damage, its mainly important if you are solo healing 10man and the healer gets the spike, but you can still save people from dying on 25man.

    Lady:
    Spoiler: Show
When the three adds spawn, stand in the middle of 2 with https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=48818 and taunt the 3rd one, which is the furthest away from you, this way all 3 will aggro to you. While you are taunting the 3rd, use https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=53595 on the other 2. When they are stacked on you use https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=31935 to interrupt the casters.)

    Gunship:
    Spoiler: Show
In case you are jumping keep an eye on the Bosses stacks (pets, and damage can reset the stacks, resulting in it not dropping by the time the next mage spawn, so you might have to delay your jump if the boss has a lot of stacks (the more stacks he has the more damage he deals) – be sure to communicate it to the raid if you take this route, so the DPS doesn’t jump to their death, or use a defensive CD.

    DBS:
    Spoiler: Show
you can also switch to https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=69403 at adds, making sure your https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=53736 stack doesn't drop from the boss, when boss is below 30% use https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=498 , when other tank taunts use https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=6940 , on last Beasts use https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=64205 , also can give https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=10278 to a Marked person, who is a caster (healers, ranged DPSes), you can also stun adds with https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=41468 , and can taunt the adds from the DPSs if they are hitting them.

    Rotface:
    Spoiler: Show
You will be on the boss, so make sure to always face the spit, this way the melee only have to move once behind the boss, and not twice

    Festergut:
    Spoiler: Show
You can reset stacks with https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=642 , however if you do that make sure you have a cancelaura macro :
    [ident]
    Code:
    #showtooltip
    /cast Divine Shield
    /cancelaura Divine Shield
    [/ident]
you have to press it at least twice to make sure it will remove it, it’s also useful to macro your spells to remove https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=10278 , here is an example:
    [ident]
    Code:
    #Showtooltip Hammer of the Righteous
    /Cast Hammer of the Righteous
    /Startattack
    /cancelaura Hand of Protection
    [/ident]
,or if you don’t have macro have very fast fingers to remove it: as the boss won’t target you as long as https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=642 is on you, meaning he will target someone else: in a good case the other tank (but if you have 2 tanks it’s questionable why you would remove it as it comes with a damage bonus), in the bad case it will target a DPS or a healer and pummel them to death, in case you are not removing your stacks, make sure to use https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=498 when you have 6 stacks, and ask for a https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=33206 , or a https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=6940 .

    PP:
    Spoiler: Show
if you are abo there is a guide on YT (SayNoToTryhard Abomination Tutorial Video) if you are on the boss, make sure to always move the boss to the opposite side of the room where the ooze spawns, meaning if Green Ooze spawns you move towards the Red ooze’s position to place the choking next to the wall, it’s a good idea to place the choking next to the wall, by positioning the boss right next to the wall with his backside facing it – so the choking will be next to the wall and easier to avoid, then move it back to the table, when red ooze is spawning move it towards the green ooze’s position. Also there is a trick, if you move the boss towards the gate, away from table, then because of the movement towards the table he will start to cast later, this way you can save up some time, but it’s not really used, also not always optimal. You can also use https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=10278 on the red ooze’s target in case the player would get hit by it, this way the red ooze will retarget, but you save the raid from a wipe, at least for a short period of time.

    BPC:
    Spoiler: Show
At Taldaram you should be on top of the stairs, facing the entrance, while the bosses standing in front of you facing the mirrors behind you, so the melee is closer to the ranged group (=easier soaking), so the opposite way as on Valanar, where you face the mirrors and the bosses in front of, you face the entrance: as this way the melee standing behind the bosses will need less of a distance to move in order to spread, and will be further away from the ranged group also on Keleseth you should use your https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=498 , because healers are more focused on MT(DK), and if you are playing with beginner healers you can easily die here.

    BQL:
    Spoiler: Show
use https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=20165 if you are OT , also make sure to use defensive CD when you get the debuff https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=71623

    VDW:
    Spoiler: Show
use https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=69403 on worms, use https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=31935 on Zombie for slow, and just taunt the adds.

    Sindy:
    Spoiler: Show
In case if you are tanking it you have to pay attention on the damage you will get. On first Frost Breath don’t use cooldown (You still have https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=54428 -3%damage reduction and 12% dodge because you use it just before pull) and of course https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=48952 and https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=53601 . On Second Breath you can use your https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=498 , and https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=50364 on the Blistering, on the second ground phase there is another breath after the blistering so you should ask for https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=33206 , or a https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=6940 . In last phase the same rotation, on first breath nothing, 2nd https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=33206 , on Blistering https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=50364 , 3rd Breath https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=498 , and if you have a good DPS its dead, if not you will have to ask for https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=6940 + https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=64205 from Holypala, and https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=31821 on Frost Resistance. If there is more breath, then be ready to meet your creator. Before blistering you can put https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=10278 on a healer, this way they won’t get pulled, usually a ret paladin will do this job, but it’s helpful to know.

    LK:
    Spoiler: Show
As an offtank, which you will be as a prot pala, your job will be to dispel the https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=70337 as well to take the https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/npc=37698 . Make sure to dispel the necrotic instead of losing one person, as I said earlier I’m using https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=69403 for easier aggro and more damage, keep taunting off the ghouls from warrior with https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=31790 WHEN GHOULS ARE ON LOW HP, (be careful, if you use it on the tank, or on a ghoul that’s on the tank then you can also taunt LK with it by mistake), and you can use https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=62124 on ghouls that are left, or going for ranged. You have to use your https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=54428 before the pull, so it will be up when second Shambling spawns. When it happens you no longer take ghouls, and preparing to taunt it, you have to use your taunt when its body is out from the ground, it's important and needs a bit of practice.
When you have 2 Shambling LK should be around 75% HP with a decent group of LOD DPSs, BEFORE the first shambling goes Frenzy (less than 20% hp) you have to ask for a https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=33206 , and BEFORE Pain Suppression falls off, you have to use https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=498 . If you taunted the ghouls correctly, your Necrotic should be around 9 (450 000 dmg / 5sec), before your Divine Protection falls off, use https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=48817 and run away, when the stun is off use https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=31935 and keep running, most of the times they die by passing the necro.
In case it doesn't happen you will have to go close, to get the necro on you then https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=4987 yourself. It can be scary and dangerous especially if you do it on the first time, first you should have OMNICC addon which shows the seconds your debuffs have, it also shows necrotic duration. What you have to know about necrotic is that is on the target for 15 seconds, and does damage every 5 seconds, (this is also shows you have 5 seconds to dispel necrotic in the first phase from a player), so when you see the necrotic did the second tick, you have 5 seconds left till the necrotic jumps to the closest target, or it will be lost if there is no target close to it. You have to be relatively close to the Shambling after the second tick, but make sure not to be in melee range, and when 2 seconds left you have to go close and stun it with https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=41468 (most of the time it will only last for 3 seconds because of the Holy Wrath you used earlier). After the necro jumps to you, dispel from yourself and run, if you see you would get hit, use https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=55004 .
If you somehow manage to not kill it, and it has a few % hp, don’t worry just bring it back to the raid, while paying attention to not kill the raid with its https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=73794 (the shambling should never face the raid for this reason) and kill it, preferable under a stun or a https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=6940 from a ret paladin to not die, since it will be Frenzy.
And it brings us why I think the above is the BIS itemization for Prot Paladin: because you have the hit and expertise to Stun the Shambling, what you could do in case you are using expertise weapon, is to switch before transition to a weapon that gives hit(if you don’t have hit cap), this way you have hit cap (such as https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=50672 ), you stun the Shamblings and before phase 2 you switch it back. On Transition you can also use https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=50708 in case you want to get bonus damage, and more aggro on the ragings.
After this 2 option will be, you take LK, or you don’t take LK, in case if you do take LK and not the last raging, when you run in ask for a https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=6940 , most likely from Holy Paladin. On the First Soulreaper Use https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=50364 , and ask for https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=33206 + https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=6940 , because you need cooldown for melee haste as well which is on LK for 5 seconds after the second tick of the soulreaper.

    Source: all over discord
This Picture perfectly shows how the soulreaper works. On the Second Soulreaper you will have your own CD (= https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=498 ), make sure to use it before you get the first tick from the soulreaper, but as close to it as possible, to have for the melee haste as well. After Second SR the MT will take LK.
After this your job will be on second transition to dispel the https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=69242 from the tank, and make sure the new raging is on the tank or on you, its’ always better if you get hit once, than a healer or a DPS. On second Transition you have around 1 second to use your taunt on the new raging before you get the silence from the previous raging, keep in mind you can use https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=53595 WHEN you are silenced, in case retris are slacking, you have a spell to generate aggro. In phase 3 its really on the guild or raid what you will do, maybe the only thing you have to do is soak with https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=498 , since you CAN taunt the spirits when they are moving, in case someone didn’t stack, you can taunt the spirit that goes towards the player.

    RS HC
    Halion:
    Spoiler: Show

As an addtank use https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=69403 and do your AOE rotation (Hammer of the Righteous + Consecration + Holy Shield + Avenger’s Shield) and use Hand of Reckoning on Living Embers if there is any left on MT/Halion tank. You can use your https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=31790 , but only on Unholy DK or on a DPS, NEVER ON the embers or from the MT, ALWAYS on DPS.
If you are tanking Halion, same opening as usual, and you always have to use a CD when the healers are moving or when the corporeality is 60%, means when there is a meteor or a cutter, depends in which realm you are on. What cooldown you can use? Well you have https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=498 which should be use on 60% on corporeality, but beside this you can ask for Divine Sacrifice from Holy paladin, Hand of Sacrifice, Pain Suppression, but always use a CD.
If you are inside tank, you will get https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=33206 before you enter to phase 2, make sure https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=53601 is on you, with a freshly used https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=54428 Divine Plea and https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=48952 , you enter and TAUNT the boss, then single target rotation. In phase 2 you shouldn’t worry about any cooldowns in general, because you will be fine without any, but if you panic there is always your Divine Protection. In phase 3 make sure to have a CD on you during cutters or when its 60%, you can ask for 3 Hand of Sacrifice, 1 https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=64205 and 3 https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=31821 , also your own Divine Sacrifice, ask for them during cutters. What I would recommend, is to ask for Cooldowns, and keep your Divine Protection in case the corpo is 60% and/or the Holy Pala gets second Debuff and no nitro. Because in general you can always use your own CD faster, than to ask for a CD.
If you are outside tank, on the first Meteor use your https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=50364 on Flame Breath, and use Divine Protection on second Meteor, or the opposite, it’s up to you, you won’t die, there are 6 healers. There are no more meteors, because if there is a 3rd Meteor it’s a wipe (meaning not enough DPS and will hit enrage). Before phase3 make sure to refresh Sacred Shield + Divine Plea + Holy Shield, and you have 2 options, the safer one to use Divine Protection at the start, or to ask the outside tank if its Prot pala and not Prot Warr (although prot warrior can use intervention as well - 30% damage reduction with https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=46947 )or the Holy Paladin to give you Hand of Sacrifice. So outside you have the following Cooldowns: 2 Hand of Sacrifice (1 if the addtank is warrior - 1 https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=46947 ) + 1 Pain Suppression + Divine Protection, and your own Divine Sacrifice. Same as inside, make sure to always have a CD on yourself when healers are moving (meteor or Holy Paladin second debuff), or when the corporeality is 60%.

    Anub:
    Spoiler: Show

In general there are 2 Prot Paladins, or Prot Warriors, so 2 addtank, it can be done easily as solo, but in general there are 2 addtank. You will take 2 adds, the other will take 2, you bring them under the boss for the melee to cleave them down, make sure to keep https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=48952 on yourself. What you have to pay attention (especially if you are soloing it), is that they do a massive damage. And you will have to use https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=48817 to interrupt their casting ( https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=66134 ), if you are soloing it you need to use Divine Protection on the first addwave (you will get MD from hunters in both scenarios-2 or 1 tank), on the second you will need a Pain Suppression and a Hand of Sacrifice from First Ret paladin.
When Anub goes down make sure to stun the adds, with both https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=41468 and https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=48817 , but there will be army from DK tank. When it comes up on the first addwave you will get a Hand of Sacrifice from 2nd Ret Paladin. Then the raid will push the boss to phase 2. On the next add wave you will again have your Divine Protection, and also you have to use your second https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=40093 . When the adds are close, use your divine protection, use a few DPS spells for aggro, then use Holy Wrath and run away from the adds behind a Frost Sphere which was killed before by the raid, and when the adds are in the middle of it you move around the frost path, you can use https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=48827 to slow them, then you will have to interrupt their cast (Shadow Strike), if you used Holy Wrath before, no problem, you go there and use https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=25046 if you are a Blood Elf, but make sure to interrupt this (this kiting is the same if you are 2 tanking it, not only when you are soloing this, only difference is the cooldown management). And when the second Add wave comes in Phase 2 Unholy DK’s will use https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=42650 (at least they should), and the boss should be dead, in case it still have a couple of % HP, you will have to use Holy Wrath to stop their last cast (Shadow Strike).

Thank you for reading my guide, hope you could find something useful in it.

Ending up with: 535 Defense, 5.64% Hit, 6 expertise, 22k armor, adviced to use http://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=44325 and http://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=44328 , with http://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=42996 , with those you will end up with 544 Defense, 8.23% Hit, 6 expertise, 22k armor
    Major Glyphs:

    https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=41100
    https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=45747
This build can be bought from a few thousand gold, only because http://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=43586 , http://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=42508 will be expensive, other items should around a few hundred max/item.
You can of course buy these BOE’s and meantime farm items from dungeon, if you consider buying http://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=49904 , and http://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=49907 , the only negative thing with these items, that they don’t give any defense, and you will need those at the very start. But of course you can buy any of these BOE items. Your first priority as a tank should be to reach 540 defense (520 for dungeons) and capping hit (8% melee hit), and trying to reach 26 expertise (def and hit is first, after that the expertise). If you have all 3 from these on cap, then stack as much armor and stamina as much you can.

    Trinket List

  3. July 5, 2023
Firstly, thanks for posting a new guide on the warmane forums. We already have plenty of Prot pala guides, but it's always nice to get newer ones, as the old guides often don't get maintained as the years age on.

Haven't had time to go over the best in slot lists yet, but I already noticed a few poignant issues in the rotations section

    Spoiler: Show

    Rotation
    Opening rotation before every fight:
    1. Before the pull you should apply https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=53601 at 7 seconds left from pull
    2. https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=54428 for 3% damage reduction
    3. https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=48952 + https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=40093
    4. https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=31884
    5. https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=48827 and before it lands
    6. https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=62124

This way you will have every defensive spells on you, and you can do the maximum amount of damage at the very start of the encounter. You have to practice this opening, to make sure your taunt is used at 0 on pull (it’s important that https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=62124 hits first, because it only deals damage if the target isn’t already targeting you), and then your https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=48827 lands.
After this you use your single target rotation:
    1. https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=61411
    2. https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=53595 ,
    3. https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=48952
    4. https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=20271
    5. https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=48818

and continuing these off cooldown, making sure you keep up your https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=53601 on yourself.
    AOE rotation is the following:
    1. https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=53595
    2. https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=48818
    3. https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=48952
    4. https://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/spell=48827

    1) Firstly, the opener is a bit too rigid and fixed.

Depending on whther or not you're able to pre-cast a consecrate in position,(ie stand underneath where boss spawns prior to aggro) you should factor in a precasted consecrate.
Then in some cases you might also need to save Avenger's shield for something else.

For example here's how an opener might look on DBS or Lich King, with a set timer and you're able to pre-pull consecrate, or in other scenarios where you're able to pull the boss into a consecrate from afar (or might need to save Avenger's shield for another reason)

Precasted Sacred Shield -> Precasted Divine Plea > Precasted Holy Shield > Precasted Consecration @ future boss location > start mashing Hand of Reckoning at 0.01 sec left on pull timer > Instantly Wings + HotR on pull the instant AFTER hand of reckoning lands > Judgement if assigned to the debuff, Avenger's shield otherwise > Shield of Righteousness > Judgement or Avenger's shield (whichever wasn't cast earlier, skip avengers if needed for adds in next 20 sec) > Hammer of the Righteous > onto the normal 6-9-6 rotation.

As always it pays to be flexible in the opener, for example your Avenger's Shield may be necessary or more optimally saved for other reasons, eg, Marrowgar spikes, aggro'ing adds (solo tank LK), silencing/interupting spellcasters. As always, tank rotations need to be dynamic and not quite this rigid, although I understand new players like a set-order to learn from, the best guides will communicate a sense of fluidity in an easy to comprehend manner.

    2) Secondly, your guide is completely lacking an explanation of the 6-9-6 rotation principal for prolonged DTPS after the opener is accomplished. If anything, your "Priority order" is actively promoting the OPPOSITE by encouraging new players to cast ShR + HoTR in back to back GCD's by listing them in 1) and 2), which correct when ranked by threat per skill, is the mortal sin of high DTPS rotations in the long term, due to causing conflicting cooldown resets in the future.

Also it's worth noting that you have ShR listed at #1, and HotR as #2 on single target threat. Typically HotR does more threat per cast even on single target than ShR assuming no funky block value mechanics at play, such as the item level 200 block value relic, but even then I'm fairly sure HotR still wins out at least in my foggy memory of many years-old sims into the matter. You can probably recheck using Rawr and changing variables like relics/weapons, checking between fast 1.6 swing weapons and weapons like BvB to see how the threat per casts change. For the interim, I'm fairly sure it's more accurate to list HotR as 1st, and ShR as 2nd, but do be sure to double check a trustworthy sim.

The 6-9 rotation concept (apart from having an immature giggity "nice" name) is a concept that all prot paladins should at least be aware of, and no rotation section on a Prot Pala guide is complete without at least acknowledging it. It's an old principal which over the years has been built upon, it shouldn't be religiously followed, but all the most optimal rotations eventually settle upon it, as there is no other soution which perfectly achieves 100% GCD uptime without relying on Avenger's Shields/Sacred shields as filler. Even if the advice merely comes in the form of saying"eventually don't cast ShR and HoTR back to back just once in the rotation, aftwards your cooldowns will line up better", it's better than nothing.

But essentially the way I explain this to new players is something like as follows:

6 = You have 2 main-rotation-skills useable every 6 sec, Hammer of the Righteous and Shield of Righteousness, these should be used every 2nd global.

9= You have 3 main-rotation-skills that are useable every 9 seconds, which are Holy Shield, Consecrate, and Judgement. These should be woven "between" every ShR and HoTR to prevent those skills being cast in back to back GCD's.

Extras = You also have to refresh Sacre shield once per minute, and Avenger's Shield can be used as a freeby for more threat or to fix mistakes.

Then I'll give a visual example such as:

    Single target sample 6-9 rotation
    6 HoTR -> 9 HS -> 6 ShR -> 9 Cons -> 6 HotR -> 9 Judge -> 6 ShR etc etc
If possible I'd link a gif of an action bar with the 5 skills perfectly coming off cooldown the moment they're next used.

By using your skills in the order of a 6 second CD > 9 second CD > 6 second CD > 9 second CD pattern, you will achieve perfect GCD uptime and minimise cooldown overhead (where an ability sits ready on your actionbars unused for more than 1.5 seconds). The "6-9" rotation is the defacto rotation all prot paladins should strive to "fall in to the groove on" once in a prolonged fight.

For example, when a scenario occurs that required you to withhold consecrate for AoE, or HotR for adds (or any other temporary deviation from the 6-9 rotation), what will inevitably happen is at some point in the next 9 seconds, 2 of your main skills WILL come off cooldown at the same time, causing a GCD gap where you have nothing to cast for over 1 second. By being aware of the 6-9 principal, ie, not casting HoTR and ShR in 2 GCD's back to back, you will eventually cause all future cooldowns resets from having a conflict or being forced to sit for 1.5 seconds without a skill available to cast (apart from Sacred shield or Avengers shield).

In an oversimplified manner, we can generally explain once a cooldown conflict happens, you can return to a 6-9 principal'd rotation by casting either Sacred Shield or Avenger's Shield (to create a GCD's worth of "leeway") and then making sure NOT to cast HoTR + ShR back to back in the next 2 GCD's that follow. However, wasting a GCD to "reset" like this in the middle of a rotation, whilst common advice given to new prot paladins, has always been suboptimal.
In the hands of an experienced Ppala, if they properly understand the 6-9 principal (and can plan ahead 4-5 GCD's) you can often pick a more optimal GCD order without needing to waste an unneccessary GCD and waste a cooldown like Avenger's shield, or be forced into refreshing Sacred shield early (eg with >30 sec remaining)

Then additionally, in a very optimised 6-9 principal'd rotation with no deviations or mistakes, every 2nd consecutive Judgement is an opportunity to cast either Avenger's Shield or refresh Sacred Shield without dropping the 20 second duration judgement debuff from the boss. Simply skip the judgement, and cast the other GCD instead.

Even in high-AoE situations the 6-9 principal doesn't change, just situations will arise where you are required to withhold a skill CD and then return to the 6-9 rotation later, or instantly cast Consecrate as your FIRST skill, but even then you can typically do a 6-9 principal'd rotations in the likes of:

    if exactly 3 mobs (AoE)
    6 HoTR > 9 Consecrate > 6 ShR > 9 HS > 6 HoTR > 9 Judgement > etc

    If 5+ mobs (AoE)
    9 Consecrate > 6 HoTR > 9 Holy Shield > 6 ShR > 9 Judgement > etc

In either variant Avenger's shield can be used a ANY TIME without throwing off the 6-9 principal.

It'll be quite the challenge to condense all of this information down in a manner where new players can easily understand it without sounding like a novel. In my guild discord chats I'm a fan of simplifying it down to "after the first 20 seconds of a boss once you're sure you aren't losing boss aggro, just stop casting HotR + ShR in back to back GCD's ever for the rest of the fight" and they end up "accidentally" falling into a 6-9 principal'd rotation without needing to know the full theory behind why it works.

I haven't had time to go over the BiS lists but in general, as long as you encourage players to collect multiple armor sets and think clearly about when 264 armor pieces vs the 277 avoidance/stam pieces vs various hit rating/expertise item swaps are needed, you can't have done too badly. Encourage players to swap equipment regularly between boss encounters. Eg, armor set on Marrowgar, then a higher Expertise/Stamina set for LDW, and back to Armor set for gunship without sacrificing too much hit rating or falling under expertise softcap.

As a wise man once said, If I had more time, I would've written a shorter letter. Polish and finesse down the key information into the least words possible when writing a quality guide.

Cheers for your contribution. Good luck condensing all the info down.

  4. Very nice and detailed guide. Appreciate your input on item sets and prot pala POV on some encounters. If only there was some fresh guide, and in the same manner, for BDK...

  5. Just so you know...you do not want to use sacred shield, its a pvp spell. plus it uses 12% of you base mana just for 500 absorbed dmg...

also avenging wrath prevents you from using defensive cooldowns for 30 sec :S

definitetly don't do that if you are low gs or in/with low gs group

Any mitigated damage is damage that you didn't receive. And scared shield scales with SP just like any other spell.
Avenging wrath is huge boost to threat and that few % of DPS that may determine wipe or kill.
If he is low GS, he won't get in situation where it would matter, i.e. LoD or RS25HC.
Definitely don't give advices while not knowing anything about class yourself.

  7. Except this guide is manly aimed at new players. (please learn to read)
...wich won't find themselves doin LoD or RS25hc anytime soon :D

This is so hilariously wrong it almost hurts. Lets address all your concerns 1 by 1

    Regarding Sacred Shield
    - Mana:
At level 80 Sacred Shield costs about 500 mana depending on race. That's less than HALF the cost of an Avenger's Shield or Consecrate, and only slightly more than the cost of a single Holy Shield spell. For a spell that lasts 60 seconds (with talents) this is almost negligible given the amount of mana restored from Blessing of Sanctuary, Divine Plea and a single point in Spiritual Attunement, and any other external sources such as replenishment or an rdruid's revitalise talent.

    -Absorption amount:
    The formula per Sacred shield is (600 / 80 * 100) + sp/1.064)*1.2
With a Base of 600 absorption, level of 80, and a typical BiS Prot paladin's unbuffed ~1300 spell power assuming 2.1k strength (from Touched by the light, low assumption, usually higher with raid buffs) we get ~2,560 damage absorbed, per shield on a 6 second internal cooldown.

Remember; The Sacred shield spell cast puts a 60 second buff on yourself, and any time you take damage with this 60 second buff, you trigger a 100% chance to trigger a 2,560 damage shield, with a 6 second internal cooldown between shields.

We can expect around 9 procs in a 60 second interval since not every proc is guaranteed to happen off cooldown, or in other terms, about 23,040 damage absorbed OUTSIDE OF ICC per 500 mana spell cast.

Long story short; A Prot pala should always be aiming to make sure he has a Sacred shield buff on himself at all times, this is literally one of the most effective and efficient ways to reduce your damage taken and improve your survival for literally a single button press per minute. Not to mention if you have a holy paladin, the Sacred Shield buff also works with other friendly targets Flash of Lights in regards to the additional Heal Over Time component.

Especially since you can literally cast this on yourself before a pull begins, or whilst moving between trash mobs into a dungeon.

    Secondly; regarding Avenging Wrath useage as a tank;
YOU SHOULD BASICALLY ALWAYS USE THIS AT THE START OF A BOSS FIGHT TO KEEP AGGRO IT'S SERIOUSLY THAT SIMPLE. Your Divine Prot has a 2 minute cooldown, the 30 second lockout is inconsequential. No math needed here, simple common sense. If you're in danger of dying within the 30 second wings lockout at the start of a fight you have other serious concerns and you can use trinkets, healthstone and potions to compensate AND you can still use Divine Sacrifice cooldown, with a /cancelaura macro to stop the health transfer component and still enjoy the -20% damage reduction effect from Divine Guardian.
If that's still not enough, don't forget Prot paladin benefits from one of the most insanely powerful talents in the game; Ardent Defender. This talent practically states that as long as you healer isn't falling asleep more than once per 2 minutes you literally can't die.

If you lose aggro to your DPS, they die, and you failed in your role as a tank. Simple as that. Your points about being undergeared are actually points in favor of why habitually using Avenging Wrath is especially important; This is an old realm with plenty of characters dating all the way back to the moltdown, many of which are BiS or very close to BiS; Hence if you're a low geared tank, you need to work HARDER to keep aggro from these DPS'ers, not be lazier. Especially in the context of a guide, which aim to offer guidance and build good habits in players, for any circumstance they may find themselves in. With all these factors in mind, yes you may need to be wary of the 30 second lockout, but in almost every circumstance you should still be "popping wings" at the start of a boss encounter.

Again, note that these forums are a place to share knowledge, mostly regarding to the principle of "meta". The principle that all endgame aspects of the game have been thoroughly researched, calculated, and tested over the course of over 15+ years (wotlk literally came out in 2008) by MILLIONS of players, many of which smarter than anyone on the warmane forums and have left behind their calcs and knowledgebase for us to follow. To put in perspective how many people that is, if each person who has played WotLK WoW was represented by a single grain of rice, it'd be enough to fill up a large mansion to the rafters with rice grains. And every single last one of those rice grains represents a person who has tried and experimented with builds and spells and added to the collective total "meta knowledge" that serves as our knowledge foundation in the modern era.

All I ask is that ill thought, low effort opinions are kept to their owners, to prevent the spread of misinformation.

its funny you mention that, because like you said, people have done their research but there are things that completely eludes them wierd heh ?
like for example, a 15+ years old habit that makes no sense.

Sacred shield is a holy paladin spell, wich grants him the ability to crit with flash heal. (only that should be sufficient to tell you i'ts not a prot tank spell)
now here is the funny thing : holy pala doesn't use flash heal at all in Pve. they use holy light instead.

but it doesn't stop there. you see, sacred shield scales on spell power. (like Persivaln stated above) that means the tank would have a lesser effective sacred shield than the holy pal anyway. coz... you know... spellpower and tank...

And to top it all, the tank doesn't have the use for flash heal either. also, apparently, even if you do use it, the crit portion wich supposedly affects your tank doesn't work at all when someone else cast the spell, wich makes using this spell as a tank totally useless because your holy pal cannot get the effect of it.

Now, i know you're thinking. the damage absorb right ? yes that makes sense... for the holy pal to use it on the tank. not the other way around.

Hopes it clear any misunderstandings ;)

You know your entire paragraph is pointless information.

Judgement is a ret-paladin ability. Should holy and prot paladins use it? Are Holy and Ret Paladins allowed to bubble despite it being a prot pala ability? Guess not.

If there's no other source or hpals sacred shield is used on another tank there's no reason not to use it on yourself.

The HoT-Portion for FoL is like the most negligible thing ever about the spell in pve. Same for the increased crit while the shield lasts. It btw works on every sacred shield - infusion of light doesn't care for who casts the sacred shield on your flash target. It just checks for the buff to be present to apply the hot.

But I guess it's not easy to accept being wrong, isn't it?

  11. Holy Paladin has to waste a whole GCD to refresh shield, not having to do that and using that GCD to heal instead is a big boost in survivability for the tank
Trying to optimize the healing output to make it seamless is like the number one rule in Hpal

As someone who has played both Hpal and Ppal, I'd rather have the Ppal refresh his own Sacred Shield in every single scenario

    Hi!
    Thank you for your comment.

Regarding precasting consecration, I did forget about that and didn't include in the opener rotation. You are right with adding it, you can precast consecration in many scenarios, such as Lady adds, DBS, BPC, Sindy, LK, and in many other fights, where the boss is not active yet.
About not using specific spells, or delaying them for a better use, those are mentioned below on specific boss fights, such as Marrow Spikes, Lady adds, Halion Inferno ect..
The reason I put ShR as Number one, becasue the fact you are using Libram of Valiance, which gives 200 Strenght on Corruption dot Proc, that means if you start with ShR, by the time GCD is off, you will have the bonus 200 Strenght for your HoTR, but if you don't consider this, then yes comparing the 2 spells, HoTR does more threat in general.
I didn't mention 6-9-6 at all, the reason for that, is most of the guides are only about this rotation, so I didn't find it useful to add. Other reason for this, is you can't always use this 2 macros, since sometimes you need to use different spells in scenarios, such as on Halion while tanking it, you will have to delay HoTR 2 seconds to not get any add on yourself, making everyone's life easier. Then again, true, you can use this rotation with 2 macros, if you don't wish to keep track on what you are using, or want to focus on other things, for avarage tanking its a good option to skip mechanics, especially for new players.

Thank you very much for your input, you mentioned a lot of good, and useful ideas for the readers. Have a nice day!

    Hi!
    Thank you for your comment.
You are right in a way that SS is used in PVP, although its really usefull in PVE aswell. In general you are going with 2 tanks, with a DK as MT, and with a Protpala as OT. In most of the raids there will be a Holy Paladin, he will put SS on DK, and Protpala will put SS on himself. In dungeons you do have issues with mana as Protpala, but in raids its not the case. You have a talent called Spiritual Attunement, which will prevent you from going OOM + you will have divine plea on yourself. Even if you think its a small damage reduction, you are not behind with anything if you use it since you have to apply it once every minute. If you are tanking anything as MT, such as BPC in general, then you want to start with wings to generate the most threat you can. In case you are OT, then obviously you don't have to use Avenging Wrath at start. When you do a raid a few times, you will get to know it better, and you will also get to know when you need to use defensive cooldowns, in a PUG raid, or low gs scenario, you may want to keep your Avenging Wrath, since you don't know the healers, or you may get too much DMG, but in a LOD/RSHC, or any case you have a decent gear, and decent healers, you won't have issue using Wings at start at all.
Thank you for your thoughts. Have a nice day!
