I say no point in this system since you can opt in as ally and get no downtime already as merc and farm. Crossfaction on the other hand wont require you to play as horde but instead it encourages you to play whatever you want since you ll know that you wont be facing premade pvp groups and will know that you can actually do something. In short players wont feel inclided to play a specific faction/race or to join pvp guilds to actually able to play bg s rather than being farmed as casuals.
No ratio is involded, as soon as that 20/30/80 players que regardless of faction, battle starts.
For gear difference I ve no solid thoughts, maybe after registering the required amount of people in bg s, game places the players accordingly to their teams. 1 to x, similar geared to y and vice versa.
