I'm against capital punishment under any circumstance.

Even barring ethics, consider the cost. Putting a single convict on death row costs millions of tax dollars more than it would cost to simply keep him in prison. What is the benefit of execution as opposed to lifelong imprisonment? Is revenge worth millions of dollars to the taxpayers?

You can also consider statistics. Countries with the lowest crime rates are also the ones with the least punishment-oriented systems. No capital punishment. Low prison population and sentences. High focus on prevention and rehabilitation. In contrast, 1/10th of all Americans are behind bars. There are more African-Americans between the ages of 18-25 in prison than in college. But the USA remains one of the countries with the highest rate of crime. Evidently, there are better solutions than punishment.

I'd also want to make an appeal to empathy but that is harder to defend. I believe nearly all criminals are merely products of their environment and education. They are victims of their situation before they begin making victims of their own. Is that excusable? Maybe not. But prevention (e.g. education, gun control, etc) and rehabilitation should be the focus. We need to help people so that we may become a better society, not punish criminals. We won't get very far if all we want to do if hurt people because they hurt us. We'll be better off understanding why they hurt us, how to remove or improve the conditions that led to it, and how to help them stop.

The only problem with gun control in modern day 'murica is that we may need them in the future to bring change to the government. That and protection against invasion were the only reasons for it to initially exist as a freedom, and the latter ceases to exist in today's society. So... yeah. It leaves us between a rock and a hard place, I think.
