Well if you're joining the army to not do ****, you're in luck. That's basically all you're gonna do in a today's army.
Fighting who? The imaginary bad guys in turbans with the curly mustaches that carry buckets of oil around?
One reason: using the most technologically advanced tools to produce even more advanced tools , free schooling and you get paid while you are learning from either army scientist or they send you out to a university to learn. The technology every day people use can't compare with what the army has
So the soldiers that lay down their lives and don't get the respect they deserve get rationalized as fighting "bad guys in turbans with the curly mustaches that carry buckets of oil around".

Army and technology aren't exclusive. Just because the current system is flawed and warfare for some reason has heavy influence over how technology develops does not mean it can't and shouldn't be changed. If half the military funding of the U.S for example actually went into funding actual advances that matter and not stock piling on weaponry, you'd probably be reading this message while walking down the street from your eye computer implant after getting your lung cancer cured just 20 minutes ago.
God forbid governments prioritize the health of their citizens over tanks.

You have used a flash drive, yes? My science teacher was telling us how they had those years and years ago.
Used the internet? Army/government developed it.
Digital cameras? Army used them first.
The list goes on and on of things they made or helped make, do you know what the final exam is for an army medic to pass? They give a team of a few medics a goat. They then chop the goats leg off, if the goat lives you pass. If it dies, you fail.
You asked for a reason, getting paid to go to school and working on the best equipment isn't worth it?

I'm not sure what you're actually trying to say here. I'm not denying that the army had influence on many advances in technology. Any person with basic reading comprehension would notice that I actually admit that to be true. What I did say is that there is not a single reason why military funding couldn't instead be used to fund ongoing projects in the science community instead. We'd be significantly more advanced if our areas of technological interest didn't suddenly get reduced to "How will this help me win?" every time there's a war.
I find it hilarious that you mention that a goat is used in a test and then in the very next sentence you mention best equipment.

Yes, a goat is a living breathing creature and they have to save it using the equipment they have available on the field. Compare that few month training to that that an doctor has to do for eight years, they don't even start working on real living things for quite a few years.

Yes and that is why combat medics perform complex surgeries in hospitals and not actual specialists. ONLY REAL HARDENED MEN WHO HAVE SEEN GOATS BLEED CAN HANDLE THAT.

I do hope you realize that the US army, along with the army of every other country, has alot of other things to take care of than just fighting "terrorists"?
