Deadlywanderer pls
America has a lot of problems. The country, how "progressive" it may look on the outside, is nothing but backwards socially. We like to speak of freedoms for all, but a lot of them tend to restrict the personal freedoms for everyone just for a few. Even though we are a Democratic republic, it's also run with Theocratic elements which contradict the foundations of what our country is supposed to be. Americans can be intolerant self-entitled *******s that love to infringe on personal freedoms to make sure that their needs are being served. We do not want to help our own people who are starving poor and ****, but we choose to involve ourselves in other country's politics and stick noses where they shouldn't belong.
In essence, it's easy to hate America and it's government and I can understand why. I get tired of it. On the other hand, hating on the people who are residents of the country is stupid. Most of us aren't "gun toting, hamburger inhaling, racist, cousin ****ing, fat, inbred, hicks". America has its problems just like any other country.
Still the best social system out there :/. Sadly.
Speaking as a "foreigner" to the US, I can explain my disdain for the United States easily.
- Your country is filled with loud-mouthed bigots who get away with being loud-mouthed bigots by being given a pat on the back by other bigots
- Religion rules your country and creates the laws
- Your country is and always has been intolerant towards racial minorities and the LGBT community
- Your country is the most materialistic country on the face of the planet
- Your country is war-loving and shoot-first-ask-questions-later. This cowboy mentality gets countries like mine dragged into your sh*t-flinging competitions
- You spend more money on sh*t like war than the war vets who come back looking for homes and who inevitably end up on the streets because your country is too blue-collar to give a sh*t about anybody who needs a hand. This is why you hate things like welfare
- The war on drugs is a f**king laugh
- Americans are obnoxious and in-your-face about everything. Slap a rebel flag up on the side of your house and nobody gives a sh*t. This ties in with bold and brash bigots being applauded in your country
- Your country is completely f**king paranoid about anything relating to any sort of threat. Children are suspended for holding sticks shaped like guns at school, and for telling their friends that they'll "make them disappear" by putting the Lord of The Rings ring on them
- You can f**k a dog in the *** but you can't **** a grown, consenting man in the a**
- Your country has stupidly insane laws on sexuality down to how many dild*s you can own in certain states
- You're overly paranoid of the supernatural
It is also that same social system that is also destroying the country from the inside. Ever since September 11th in 2001 the government has started to impose more of a imperialist stance by reducing the freedoms brought on by the Constution or the anout of unessessary spending and granting of resources to other countries that are not as developed which ultimately brings the country even further into debt.
I have to disagree on the socially backwards part, because none of it is specific to America. No matter how "backwards" American society and culture, they're always just general trends that are applicable almost anywhere you look. In fact, America probably has one of the most ethical and progressive societies. While we're worried about things like gender equality, other parts of the world are still where we were decades and centuries ago. You're also taking a very small percentage of the actions of Americans and generalizing an entire country, more or less.
Also, on the topic of sticking our noses where they don't belong, it's essentially a lose/lose situation. If we do involve ourselves, we're called greedy *******s that only care about our own benefit. If we don't, we're greedy *******s who think we're too good to help the rest of the world. We've already entered and ended two World Wars successfully, either because it was necessary to maintain peace in the world, or because we were provoked into entering a war we wanted nothing to do with.
It's easy to hate Americans because it's easy to be jealous of others that are more prosperous than you.
That's not true lel.
And despite all of that, we are still the best country in the world and everyone knows it. I would be mad if I was you, too.
Shall I give you a history lesson about the details of how the 2nd world war started that so many Germans refuse to acknowledge? So, let's try not to point fingers about the United States making wars for the sake of it.
Iunno about everything else you said cuz I don't really understand politics. But in terms of government debt, an economics term, it is good. It creates demand and is an Economic drive for that nation, it does not work like personal debt at all. I would like to go into a brief explanation of public/sovereign/government debt but Im not qualified yet to do so xD and it would require a full length 90min class + 5 hours of reading outside class :P tl;dr version: Public debt is not as severe as ppl make it out to be.
Fact: the US owed ALOT of debt after the great depression, and have yet to pay it off. In economics term, it is not the quantity of debt that is important, but growth. for example if your country in a certain year owes 200% of your GDP, taking that year as base (Y), the next year you grow by 10% of base year, Y+.1Y and then the year after that 10% of the previous year, in less than 10 years your growth would have outgrown that % debt. Economics theory :D
- It's not filled with them, it just happens to be represented by them. No e of us like that either.
- Religion rules most countries. America's one of the only countries that that is becoming less true for every year. We have this thing called "separation of church and state", in case you didn't know. While it may not always hold true, it usually does.
- No it's not. It used to be intolerant towards it, yes. That is almost entirely no longer true, especially among the younger population in the US.
- What do you expect? It's the most economically advanced country in the world, of course it's going to be the most materialistic.
- Kinda true, yeah. Like I said though, it's kind of a lose/lose situation when we get involved in foreign conflict, especially ones that we are not directly involved with.
- Welfare is bull****. It's so heavily abused by people (not to be racist, but especially immigrants), and that's why it has such little support. In the case of war veterans though, that is so unbelievably false. Not only are there a surprising amount of businesses that ONLY hire war veterans or disabled people, there are a plethora of services set up for our military personnel to help them while they are in and after they are out of the military.
- Well, I mean, do whatever you want man. If you think bestiality is more socially acceptable than homosexuality though, you clearly know nothing about the matter.
- nolol? Please find me a single example of anything even relatively close to the example you just gave.
- You ran out of arguments lol. You should have stopped three points ago because now you just sound like an *****.
All trolling aside:
Generalizing the majority based on the actions of the minority. Fun fact, plenty of Americans are cynical about politics as well.
See the Establishment Clause.
Don't people love to bring up the past. In about 60 years we went from Blacks being able to vote to having a Black president. Pretty good progress in my opinion. Not to mention that over half of America allows gay marriage.
No, China is.
As if Europe hasn't had it fair share of wars. Who hasn't?
Again, generalizing the majority based on the actions of the minority. Most Americans that I have met are not so bigoted nor ignorant, but it's not like it can completely be controlled with such a heterogeneous population.
That's a bad thing?
Zoophilia is a crime in the majority of the United States. Sodomy laws have been struck down or repealed in the majority of the United States by Supreme Court Precedent. The remaining states with sodomy laws are unenforceable due to said Supreme Court ruling.
As if every country doesn't have some stupid laws?
TL;DR every country has its problems. So does America. You can't base your thoughts of everyone in American simply because we have some ****heads in the media or in the government, especially when you consider the amount of diversity in the United States. This basically sums up why I love to be in my country, regardless of the **** that goes on.
It kinda is xD In terms of all major social topics out there, US still leads. Gender equality, racial equality, GDP, freedom of speech, etc. I mean at least US makes an effort at trying to hide all the sexism and racism xD you should see my parent's face or my co-worker's reaction at the mention of "homosexual" xD
This is what I've observed out of how Americans act, and how people react to Americans. Not really my opinion, but mostly common complaints. Keep in mind this is a massive generalization.
People from other countries don't like Americans because the ->average<- American finds it really difficult to look outside of his/her country's borders and never stops being shocked by the fact that other countries and cultures actually exist, and celebrates its sub-300 year history as if it's the most significant thing on the planet. The average American has a lot of trouble thinking of any cultural/social issue in a context that isn't in the USA, and despite having the world at their fingertips in 2015 this isn't showing any signs of improving. Americans find themselves in awe every time they find out that different places do things differently, yet their superiority complex stands firm.
In their confidence and arrogance, the average, patriotic, g*d-fearin' American has no problem taking a steaming **** on every other nation, because they view them as a competitor. Then there's the opposite, where their strong enthusiasm for another country is very embarrassingly misinformed, alike to how Japanese people don't like weeaboos. Being Filipino, I cannot stand Anglophiles from places like Tumblr.
To other countries, like all those within the European union that know lots about each other, this makes America appear very, uh, undeveloped. So you can see why people don't like it. And remember we're talking about several very different countries in terms of language, culture, politics, and documented history spanning thousands of years. Europe is not one little country.
Where the USA has spent so much time in isolation, tons upon tons of **** was happening in the world, and where hundreds of different nations and societies were constantly interacting with each other, the American populace has kept relatively very little perception of the rest of the world outside of "those guys". America's rampant xenophobia and propaganda only started slowing down after the fall of the Soviet Union. The only other place like this that I can think of that isn't an underdeveloped mudhole is North Korea. And maybe possibly Switzerland, they like their isolation.
America is a major superpower, it's powerful, wealthy, influential, and in spite of this, it hasn't helped its people become more informed, it doesn't actively encourage an interest in other countries or cultures outside of its own.
In all fairness, Americans I have met in person have always been very keen to hear about where I'm from and would ask all sorts of questions with eagerness. Most Americans don't actively seek any knowledge because they've never had the pressing need to do so, and when they do, it's usually some kind of hobby for them, or it has something to do with their job or their family.
But America, as a generalized mass/nation, should consider doing more for its citizens' awareness of the world. Even their politicians have a skewed perception of the outside world. Despite thousands of years of history outside of America that Americans can learn from, their preferred point of reference is a sub-300-year history of the USA.
TL;DR When I hear people complain about Americans, it always comes down to more or less this: People don't like America because it's like being in a room with lots of people, but the one wielding the big stick is also the only one with down's syndrome and everyone else has to put up with him. The kid with down's is too busy getting excited about the big stick to acknowledge who he shares his space with.
Sweden bruh.
Not as rich :3
