In all seriousness I was pretty on the fence about it too at first, but I kept having lots of issues with Skype and after a few days of using Discord I found it to be much better of a program for me. There was a bug in Skype (not sure if it's been fixed yet, haven't used it in awhile) where if the call leader had their mic muted and someone joined the call, they'd be unable to hear anything; my friends and I had a Skype call going pretty much 24/7 so it was a problem. Screen sharing didn't work half the time which wasn't a huge deal since we didn't do much of that anyway, but it gets annoying when it happens more than occasionally. If you're just using Skype as a messaging program it's not too bad, but I still had my fair share of issues with it (freezing, crashing, etc) that made switching the better option.

Discord has a number of things going for it that I like. Your server is hosted on an actual server rather than, for example, the call host's computer in Skype, so it's good if people have ****ty connections that can't handle hosting a Skype call. If half the group wants to hold a different conversation than the other half they can just move to a different channel instead of everyone talking over each other like in Skype. The messaging is nice, I leave sounds off except for when someone types my username (@inflection, for example), but there is still a visual notification next to the server image so I can see when there are new messages. Imgur, youtube, and other media links open in Discord itself so you don't have to open a new browser tab, which is pretty convenient. It shows what games people are currently playing under their name like Steam does but you also have the option to turn that off if you want. It's also got a dark theme and I like when programs/websites have dark themes. The sound quality is good and it has both mute and deafen buttons which I like too. I dunno, I just sound like a Discord shill but it really is a pretty nice program.

You can't quote messages or Ctrl+F to search like you can in Skype but I don't really find myself doing much of that anyway.
