    Force name change?

    Hello.

So today one of my guildees says that he was forced to change the nickname for his char. I won't be mentioning what nickname that was, however, I understand that it could offend some people. So it's totally okay that someone could've had reported him, and so the staff had to force him to do so.

But now, I log on to my account and want to enter the world with my main char, but I'm busted as well and have to change my nickname to enter. Now please tell me, the nick of my main char is Summoner (he's a warlock). Does that nick contain offence against anybody? Or is it maybe breaking any moral rule?

That's literally one of the best possible names for a Warlock, I've played with this nickname back in Molten times for many years. And now I'm asked to change it without any explanations? What's wrong with that?

Please tell me the reasons for that decision, or if that's a mistake, fix it. That nickname means very much to me and I wouldn't wish to loose it for nothing.

Many thanks in advance and cheers.

The name Summoner is listed in the client in the NamesReserved.dbc file meaning your client can't use the name without being modified and our servers enforce it. Names that already exist on the list are flagged for rename at login.

You mean it's reserved by someone and none but that person can use it? I have a warlock on Blackrock realm with the same nickname but he wasn't affected by that.

It's a file that Blizzard made and populated, we just enforce them. Not sure why it isn't being enforced on Blackrock now. It's basically like the profanity list the game uses for censoring chat but only used for names. It mostly contains brand and npc names.

But how come I was able to play with it before?

The servers weren't enforcing it until more recently.

So with this enforcement, there's no way I can keep that nick and have to change it? And nothing can be done about it?

Yes. Unfortunately the list contains a lot of names that I personally don't see as being harmful but they also won't be given back.

Why did u even enforce that file? Now i can't log 8 of my characters (Yahoo, Google, Shaman, Rofl, Medicine, Mj etc)! How is it normal, that you are prohibited to use absolutly okay nicknames you used FOR YEARS, and people know you by those names? I could understand if it censored insults (i remember there was a system that didn't alow to make rude/insulting nicknames), but if it makes you to rename normal nicknames - this is unacceptable!

It was part of making our servers enforce what the client enforces. Why did you modify your client to bypass restrictions? I think that's a better question.

I never modified my client anyhow, i don't even remember where i downloaded it, i am using same client for over 8 years.

Still, tell me any reason why i can't log character named Medicine and have to rename it?

Because you shouldn't be able to have a character named that, and wouldn't have been if the file with the enforced list of prohibited names hadn't been modified. All that was changed is that now the server makes sure the list isn't avoided by modifying the client.

I used client provided by warmane before, and it never caused me to rename my chars when i tried to log them.

All i can see right now - you are prohibiting the list of names that doesn't make sense (maybe Blizzard added those because of copyright strikes, i don't know, but this has no relation to warmane since it is a pirate server) and make lives of normal folks harder. Because i still didn't get an answer - how does nickname Medicine violate any rules/insult anybody and why do i have rename it?

You got an answer, you just refuse to accept it. Arguing isn't going to have that name (or any other) removed from the list.
