A few more pieces of information are needed. But I will say if you are back after 5 years and your characters are gone they most likely are lost forever.

What realm were you on?
Were you a premium member (aka did you donate on that account at any point)?

Some realms have closed, some have merged, and numerous realm cleanups have been performed.

1. No sign of them in armory? 100% un-named, flagged for rename.
2. Logged in, no characters on realms? I don't remember when last merging of servers were, that's possibility. If your characters were on decommissioned realm, you were expected to transfer your characters. Transfers are long closed.
3. Somebody got hold of your account, sold/emptied your characters. Check https://www.warmane.com/account/history for activity you don't recognize doing.
