This is a long shot, but I took a break from Warmane to play - with some friends... Now upon returning, my characters are gone! The realmlist still tells me I have 4 characters in Icecrown, but when I go into the next screen, the character list is empty.
Is there any way to recover those characters so I can donate some money and keep them in perpetuity?

recovering characters deleted by the in-activity cleanup is not possible.
Yes, just by making your account premium.
