There are two possible routes BM hunters can go with the talents. You can choose to go with or without Readiness however you will have to sacrifice the last talent in BM tree. Depending on your playstyle either one can do good but the point of playing BM is to buff your pet so most hunters don't go with readiness. Always remember to pick up Improved revive pet, Aimed Shot, and at least one point in Go for the Throat.
BM is pretty simple, gem attack power instead of agility, don't let your pet die and don't overlap too many cooldowns or you'll get caught and rekt.
Because of its simplicity you can't really pull off things that MM hunters and some survival hunters can but every spec has its strengths and weaknesses.
You're saying waste of time in a bad way? I saw a BM hunter with a chimaera on Icecrown challenging everyone to duels outside of Stormwind and beating everyone. He was at the top of the 2v2 charts (forget his name) so obviously he had some skills, but still ... seemed strong 1v1.
2.1k second week of Furious season on Lordaeron, in full hateful main set as BM when top team is 2.3k. The pressure you put out against cloth and leather, and your ability to not be CC'd during your burst is pretty game changing and you can basically farm half the comps that people play. The only comp that is somewhat difficult is plate cleave, but it is beat able. I am playing BM Disc right now with the disc being somewhat undergeared, and we are breaking even against a very good 2.1k MMR Mage Spriest, which actually stopped queueing last night because of us. BM is definitely not a waste of time.
