1) Join Lordaeron if the problem with too big with Icecrown.
2) You don't need to buy the best item (or buy any item) to play here.
3) Even tho others are doing it (it is just the same as joining a very old server).

The point is - Warmane is a business + hobby/dedication (whatever you wanna call it ) of the Staff. So people buying the best items only means that - It pays for server maintenance, development, staff salaries etc, etc and more people can play for free. No one is forced to donate to get the items. Everything is available in-game. There is a coin shop in Lordaeron as well but your gonna get an item which is 1 tier below the best ( i think) + you need to fulfill some requirements. Warmane is not a big *** company so it needs funds to stay alive. If you really want things your way, then i suggest you fund warmane 100% or GTFO.
