WotLK Can't open wow

My friend just installed world of warcraft wrath of the lich king and can't play the game. When he clicks login it says "Downloading Update" then after some time it changes to "Press the restart button below to download the patch". then when he presses the restart button it brings him to the main screen where you can login and it also says there "failed to download patch, may need to restart the game or reinstall wow". How does he fix this?

he needs to log in by using warmane account name, not email address
