I am genuinely curious in this since there are a lot of "boomers" old server players that often bring up the "back in my days people were doing 2-3k dps more" and I find it kind of odd to say the least.
By the way I am talking about WOTLK specifically.
Would you say the average dps/healing has increased or decreased over the years with the fixes the devs have been putting out?
And which fixes exactly (with changelogs links or screenshots) did contribute to that?
Lots of spells did double dip, various talents/set bonuses/trinkets, etc procced incorrectly. Some effects scaled with spellpower. Pet's did not scale properly. Etc etc
Some of those made some specs OP, others underpowered.
There was a time when Ebon plague/coe/boomkins whatever that stuff stacked. We did some gag raids, doing 200k dps and stuff, it was hilarious. That stuff was up like 9 months, people just FARMED everything. Pretty extreme example, but yeah, you get the point. Stuff is fixed up good.
I remember in old Molten a certain disease that unholy dks have stacked when it should be capped to one. For a week or so you would see iccs with practically 25 udks.
Remembering the quality of private server when molten first came to light (Thou i played tbc private server back then) was that if you have the spells working correctly it was good experience. I remember on a tbc private server long long lost and forgotten we were like 200-300 online and the server barely stayed stable. Quests weren't working. I currently have TBC and Northland lore masters, i'm amazed of all the progress wow emulators have been making as well Warmane.
Imagine it like this, back you had retail and you had private servers that kind of worked as a demo to retail, Scripted raids, scripted events ... blah those were not a thing. I still enjoy seeing the 3 guards at valliance keep talking about the beer (ale), i had so much fun finishing all wrath zones (even thou some have minor bugs, but if i manage to reproduce them on alts i'll make sure to report it now). Overall you are seeing what i would call a peak of private world of warcraft emulation.
People might have done more damage back in the days, because simply mechanics weren't working, bosses were tank and spank. There is like a changelog you can take your time and read thru - each entry to get the bigger picture.

2-3K DPS isn't even close to what it used to be, When I raced for first LoD with "Apex of Myrmidons" (before moltdown) I think the year was 2014 or 2013 we had mages doing 42k solid dps, (not burst) and that's without the stacking 13% magic dmg that angrylol was talking about, I also remember Retribution Paladins did 30k dps, Not aoe, just single target dmg.
There was this food called "storm chops" which I belive you can still aquire, it scaled in such a way that every person who ate it got around 10k extra dps, I heard some rumors it got people banned for exploiting but I can't say for sure about that.

The average DPS / HPS has declined a lot over the years, Warmane has done dussins of changes that fixed a lot of classes scaling wierd / double dipping etc, Frost DK's used to double dip on "Frost strike" so it did twice the damage it supposed to, This also applied to "Scourge strike" shadow damage if i remember right, Hunters used the spell power sword from Lich king, it was bis for them due to how spell power scaled with chimera and arcane shot. I was playing Demonology Warlock a lot back then and I used to call back my pet after it put up the spell power buff, resulting in the raid gaining around 1500 spell power for 45 seconds, because it used to refresh with less SP due to your buffs / trinkets / cloak proccs whatever went over.
The biggest change was around 4-5 years ago when they changed a lot, everyonce dps fell down around 3-5k dps dependent on your class, but before that it was even worse, let me remind you though it didn't make LoD anymore easy back then, Valkyres for example could not be slowed, supersonic speed your raid could MAYBE kill one and just hope you could push the phase 2 fast enough so there wouldn't be more then 3 pack of valkyre spawns, and the frost chamber which had like 60 or even 70% chanse of killing whole raid due to people glitching trough the floor, falling to their death's.
All in all, there's been thousands of changes and they have all contributed to what it is today.

Can confirm that, it did get people banned and it did even more post moltdown where a single trigger of it did few millions off boss HP.
