WotLK Characters missing

Hey,

Couple of days ago I logged in after not playing for several years. When I logged in, all my characters were missing. I did not know what to do. I tried to change realms and when I did that, I could clearly see on the list the number of characters that I have on the two main realms. I changed realm and still nothing, my characters on that realm were also missing. So, could you please help me solve this problem?

That number is stored locally on your computer and only updates if a character is deleted from there.
If the characters were deleted by the server during an inactivity clean up (if they didn't meet the requirements to be kept) or if someone accessed the account and deleted everything, the numbers don't change.

So, I reckon there is several of us coming back in this period. (Or trying to in any case)
Could you elaborate a little on the inactivity clean up? I've had a 2 year hiatus and came back to empty server list too. I see numbers on Icecrown and Lordaeron which is where I had chars, but yeah, everything is gone. Obviously not super happy.
