With a new year now upon us, we're taking the opportunity to do an inactivity cleanup that will refresh our realms and free up forgotten names, the cleanup will target a wider range of character levels this year, we will also conclude a 50% gold squish at the same time to promote a healthier economy.
Additionally, there will be a ban amnesty for accounts coinciding with the inactivity cleanup. Conditions of the amnesty will be added to this thread in the coming days and are under careful consideration at the time of writing.
The inactivity cleanup and gold squish will be conducted and completed on February 20, 2023. Downtime is expected to be multiple hours.
- Level 1 and above characters that have not been played since January 2022 will have their names removed.
- Characters will have the opportunity to choose a new name upon the next login.
- Level 1 - 50 characters that have not been played since July 2022 will be removed.
- Premium accounts are exempt from removals.
- Characters that are guild masters will result in the guild being removed.
- Blackrock characters that have been deleted pending restore for over 3 months will be removed.
Characters that have their name removed will have the opportunity to select a new name upon the next login.
The gold squish means that every piece of gold that exists in circulation, be it in the character's inventory, mailbox, guild bank, website trading system or otherwise, will be simply halved. Exactly as it was done last year too.
Frostmourne will be excluded from this year's squish and cleanup.

what is "above" specifacally?, does 80 level characters count into this?

Yes.
I assume even the gold on the trading system (active sales) will be returned to the owners and halved.

Logically speaking yes. They mention that its chars from 1 and up that havent played for a year, so yes those too.

What will be the best way to mitigate this? There isn't, right, we will loose the gold in any case?

There's no way not to lose gold. The only way not to lose wealth is to store it as items. In other words, start buying stuff with it that you can later sell.

No. The best way I'm using to store gold slowly but surely is buying "Porcelain Bell" and similar high vendor price items 1:1 or close from the AH and players the whole year..which pays off because the price will always remain unchanged unlike primordials, gems and other goods

How will this affect characters stored in the barracks, that are there longer than since January/July 2022?

You don't lose, because the gold you made in the past month was Inflated and not real anyway.
If there was no gold squish, AH prices would NEVER skyrocket.
Also SQL Database would overflow.
