I looked at the rules and either Im blind or it wasn´t explicitely stated whether it is allowed or not to have multiple accounts, and if so, what is and isn´t allowed to do with multiple characters online at the same time.
I just made my account here so I dont wanna break any rules.

You are allowed to have multi-accounts and multi-characters online in same time
But if you are playing as multiboxers , you should know that you can't have more than x5 characters online in same time , Beside the server will warn you before he take any action on you , So the safe zone of having online accounts is 5.

2 more questions on that:
-is 5 accounts the maximum amount of accoutns one is allowed to have, or is it just having 5 chars online at the same time, as you said?
-what about pvp? On another server I was on before I capped hellfire towers with a Horde char so that my alli char could recap for the quest, but that server didnt even allow having a 2nd char online when you flag yourself pvp. I understand that multiboxers in bgs etc is a problem and thats not what Im asking for, just wondering if stuff like capping towers or surveying areas on more than 1 char is allowed while PvP flagged

1 - 5 is number of maximum to be online , i know friends with alot of accounts because they are guild masters.
2 - here you can have characters online no matter which faction , but don't use them to exploit something (like farming honorable kills).
You can even multibox in battlegrounds and wintergrasp and even world PVP.

I had a friend who was multiboxing, and when he tried to bring a 6th character online, he got slapped with a warning. So it seems like the limit might be 5 characters per zone?

I am not sure how close you can get. You can only use more than 5 characters in PvE instances.

About the multiboxing in bgs, wg and wpvp: doesn´t that kinda ruin the fun for everyone?

If you treat MB as one player/character, you're going to have bad time. If you treat it as a premade of 5, you should understand how dangerous it can be, and throwing your characters blindly at it will only get your character a quick trip to graveyard. Treat it as a 5 man premade from the get-go.
MB has its strengths and weaknesses. MB isn't the only unfair annoyance you'll face in PvP scene. You'll face stronger premades more often than you'll run into MB's.
